I have recently been to the Huka Falls for the first time in a while (tip...you can walk your dog here) and enjoyed it and it's spectacular rapids as much as ever. There is a great parking area with lots of space (also accommodating camper vans/motorhomes) and well formed tracks on either side of the river. The one on the Eastern side links in with a track that goes all the way to the Aratiatia Rapids if wanting a longer walk. There are excellent viewing points along both sides of the river. Do note that the gates to the parking area (and therefore the Huka Falls) closes at 5.30pm so you need to be here no later than about 4.30 to really appreciate it (walk around/photos etc...).

With time to spare after visiting Huka Falls I embarked on a 2 hour walk to Aratiatia rapids.
I passed two people and a dog on the way out and was overtaken by a man on a bike, but this was the sum total for the entire walk.
Getting back was interesting as I did not want to walk again- rain was heavy at this stage.
Eventually successful in thumbing a lift back to Huka Falls, but I wouldn’t recommend anyone relying on doing this.

Good place to stop and admire the falls and the tourist jet boats. Some good walks and bike tracks are close. Lots of parking available.

In good weather the trails are great and offer some excellent views. Gets crowded at peak times so try early or late if you’re able.

Not a lot to see before the falls but certainly worth the trip. Our captain was entertaining and very knowledgeable.
