Description: Nestled on the banks of the Waikato River you’ll find the Huka Prawn Park Restaurant, Taupo’s only riverside restaurant. You can enjoy alfresco dining or find a spot inside beside the open fire all while enjoying views over the aqua marine waters of the mighty Waikato River. Our menu is unique to us, serving giant freshwater Prawns exclusively available at Huka Prawn Park, whether you order them up by the kilogram tossed in garlic butter, warm up with a curry or enjoy them lightly battered with a crisp cider or local craft beer to match you’ll enjoy a feast like no other. Not a fan of prawns, not to fear we have a range of options for everyone as well as sweet treats, coffee and a special kids menu with free keep cup. Our large open plan restaurant and alfresco dining area can seat over 300 people so you’re welcome as a couple or bring all the extended family and friends. We have plenty of space for the kids to play both inside and outside.

The menu is prawns - surprised ?

I was not overwhelmed by the taste of the Malaysian prawns . They offer 1/2kg of prawns for $50 - a bit rich for prawns that don't have much flavour or size . I found the prawns tasteless and the texture was more of a mush . I much prefer Australian prawns . I didn't think I could eat 1/2 kg of prawns so they offer 6 prawns for $18 - a bit much but I was eager to sample these prawns . Turns out it was a mistake . I was also disappointed they didn't offer other non prawn dishes . My partner is allergic to seafood and there was only a selection of salads and bread for him to order . I wouldn't go there again. And would rather sample the local prawns . The idea sounds good but it's not worth the $$

Hi there,

Thanks for visiting and reviewing our restaurant.

Whether or not you prefer our prawns over other prawns is all down to taste. There is a big difference between fresh water and salt water prawns, ours are fresh water prawns. Plenty of people do prefer our prawns.

Of course our menu is heavily prawns, however we do offer other non-prawn meals. There is always a chicken dish on offer and we have some delicious mushroom risotto cakes as well.

Trying to catch the little fellas is hard and requires patience, good day filler.
The resturant; I felt the food was expensive for the standard meals, the staff where excellent.

We always ensure we stop off for some freshwater prawns every time we are in NZ. Whether summer or winter, the restaurant is an amazing place to eat but nibbling your own freshly caught prawns from the park, while by a roaring fire and watching little birds fly around is just the best.

We paid for the excursion which was overall quite good. Young kids were able to see how they mature. We went in the height of summer and sat for a very long time tying to catch them. It took 4 hours. Kids obviously became bored. Off peak periods this would be a great day out but the height of summer, no!

Hi there,

Thank you for visiting and reviewing our park.

Sorry to hear that you only caught one prawn in four hours. We know that children can have a short attention span so we've added lots of fun activities throughout the park, including pedal boats, trout feeding, stand up paddle boards and much more.

It's fantastic to hear that you enjoyed a guided tour of our nursery and hatchery. It is part of the activity pass and a great way to see and interact with our prawns.
