“Terrific Taupo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 December 2011

We chose from the internet and were certainly not disappointed. Millennium & Copthorne Hotels have their own individual style, which we like. We will definitely book at one of their hotels next time we visit New Zealand. Their Taupo hotel has a majical position and a very happy and helpful staff.

Room Tip: Must have room overlooking the lake

Arriving at the hotel I was a little wary, as from the front, it looks a little more like a motor inn than a 4.5 star hotel. However, the quiet and charming room, and the position right on Lake Taupo, immediately allayed my concerns.

We had a lakeview suite on the first floor, which meant two rooms (a good-sized lounge room with a couch and two arm chairs, plus a large desk), a bedroom, and a large bathroom with separate shower and spa-bath. There are televisions in both rooms. The room furnishings are dark and tasteful, and there is loads of storage space in the bedroom.

More importantly, both the bedroom and lounge-room have full floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows overlooking Lake Taupo, which is about 10m from the hotel, separated only by a walking track.

We walked several times along the lake and found it delightful - there are loads of black swans and other birdlife, and a lovely view over which the sun sets when you retire for dinner.

We ate in the a la carte restaurant on our first night while watching the sun set, and the food was excellent (and very generous). The wine list was also impressive, and the service friendly and professional.

Our room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. There was no traffic noise and the only sound at night was the lake lapping at the shore.

The staff we encountered were helpful and down-to-earth.

We did not end up using internet during our stay because of the cost. I found this fairly typical of the hotels we visited in NZ.

The hotel is also reasonably close the Botanical Gardens, which were just lovely in November - full of azaleas and rhododendrons in bloom. It is about a 10-minute drive from the main shopping streets in Taupo. We found it an excellent base from which to explore the area, including Craters of the Moon and Orakei Korako.

All in all, a lovely place to stay.

Room Tip: Definitely go for the lakeview rooms or suites, over the poolside rooms.

Dear LaurenA1 - your review is very much appreciated. It was particularly good to hear that you enjoyed some of our personal favourites such as the lake edge walks from the hotel and the Botanical Gardens, we really are very lucky. Also pleased that you were happy with our dining options and I shall pass your comments on about staff friendliness as this is something we are very proud of. Hope to welcome you back to NZ, Taupo and of course this hotel in the future. Cheers Diane

stayed here for 1 night on our trip. we got an upgrade to a residential suite which was clean and tidy. Only think was it was ground floor and public can walk past the window so couldnt have the curtains open (tho the mosquitos were looking for tea) restuarant was busy with a party so ate in the a la carte restuarant which was good value and the food was great along with the service. The hotel has free wifi for 20 mins which was useful. loads of activities around the area in Taupo. would definately come back here.

Dear Blinde1 - really appreciate you taking the time to write expressing your views - thank you.
Always nice to hear that you ejoyed our lovely location and dining - we have an award winning Chef who delivers excellent menus and dining options.
re mosquitos, they are not a known problem in Taupo, we have what we call a summer seasonal midgy trout fly (tiny insect) - annoying because they follow the light at night, however, these have no bite.
Hopefully we will welcome you back and yes by all means request 1st floor preference.
Kind regards - Diane (GM)

overall, an OK place to sleep
no free internet in the room
you get 30 minutes of free internet in the hotel lobby a day

our room was tiny
the room was clean
modern furnishings: LCD TV, washroom
toiletries aren't so flash
location is ok. across the street, after a bit of a walk is the Taupo gardens - very nice
not that far from downtown - 30 minutes or so
right on the lake

amenities: 2 restaurants in the hotel. food was good. breakfast buffet was 25 bucks or so. not so worth it
there is a small heated pool. good for kids. not so good for doing any time of swimming
there is a grotto pool. a hot tub thing that is designed to be an indoor cave with fake stalagtites
it was fun
there is a small basic gym; 1 rowing machine, 1 treadmill, 1 stationary bike, and a universal machine

sleep: quiet enough but not so comfortable beds

hotel staff: very nice people, responsive to questions and requests

would likely choose somewhere else to stay next time

The location is really nice as far as scenery goes and it's nice having a dedicated walking track right outside your front door but I'm wondering if the hotel relies on this to get travellers to stay. We had 2 seperate rooms and each of us(2 couples) found the same. The rooms weren't overly clean and when we went to pull the blanket on to the bed we left it off as it was covered in somebody elses hair, grass clippings and what we hope were stains. The staff weren't welcoming at all and gave the impression that they couldn't have cared if we were there or not. All a bit disappointing after the other reviews. In my opinion you would be better off to spend a little more and stay in another hotel with a view over the lake and closer to the centre of town would be helpful.

Dear IronmanFluff - Thank you for taking the time to write. We value our guest feedback as a measure of our services and facilities. I want to assure you that it is very upsetting to read of your experience and it is definitely far from the comments we are accustomed to receiving. Room cleanliness is something we are particularly fussy with and I am unable to comment on this case without further investigation - it has been bought to the attention of housekeeper and management for urgent attention. The most written and verbal comments I receive here are about how lovely and friendly our staff are so it is a shock to think that one staff member may have let our reputation down. Difficulty comes from not knowing who it is or when it happened, we constantly monitor guest feedback and should any further incident occur I can guarantee you it will be dealt very seriously. Customer satisfaction is our main goal and I sincerely apologize for your disappointment.
Kind regards - Diane
