If you haven't seen any geothermal activity before (it's not something you really see on the daily!), check out craters of the moon. It's just an interesting walk to go on. Just adds to the appreciation of what a spectacular place NZ is.
Some people said I should not bother to going to Craters of the Moon because I had been to other larger geothermal attractions with more variety, but I'm glad I went to this one anyway.
Only NZ$8 and one hour of easy walking at most. It was a good comparison to the other geothermal attractions in the region. Many other geothermal attractions have a lot of material available for you to read and learn, but this one hardly has any.
Interesting geology, pleasant surroundings, does not seem to be a place where the large tour buses come (so no crowds to compete with).
We spent a leisurely hour walking through the Craters of the Moon taking photos of the incredible landscape and trying desperately to get used to the smell of sulphur! We would definitely recommend doing the extra loop up to the top to get the views over the area as it was beautiful. It was also very responsibly priced.
All in all, it was a nice place to visit. Had I written this review straight after being here I would have given in 5/5 however having now been to Rotorua I am rating it less, this is because there are so many FREE areas within Rotorua that provide even better thermal activity. In saying that though, this was a really cool place to visit and very well maintained, probably wouldn't go again though. However for the price ($8) it is worth a visit.
If you have never seen or experienced Geothermal activity, this is a must! Watching bubbling mud and a smoking ground makes you feel as though you are on another planet!
You purchase a ticket at the booth just before heading in to the 45-60 min. Walk (although if you are a fast walker you can do it in 30) Once you have your pass you can walk right through the building out on the the wooden walkway. there are a few view points close to the action for the best photos.
It does smell like bad eggs from the sulfur!
easy walk, very cool to see the fields of geothermic activity. did the additional walk to the lookout and the view was impressive. entrance fee was really worth it, the park was very well maintained.
