Located a 10 min. walk from the hustle and bustle of main street Paihia, Swallows nest is a perfect place to come home to after a busy day. Very clean, full ground floor apartment, separate bedroom, full kitchen, sitting inside and outside with view of Opua harbour. We loved coming home after a full day of adventure, sitting outside on the deck with a glass of wine, watching the view to the harbour. Quiet and peaceful. Jim and Janet were excellent hosts with tips of things to do and places to go that weren't necessarily in the brochures. We highly recommend it.

Room Tip: This is a single apartment

Hi Peter, so pleased we were able to make some suggestions to you for your time in Paihia and the harbour views to Opua will always be there, maybe for a return visit.

When we arrived, Janet and Jim needed to be away and not able to be there to great us. They left a note on the door and access to a key to let ourselves in. There on the counter were two cupcakes and everything ready for tea. A very thoughtful gesture from Janet and Jim.
We were pleasantly surprised at the size of the apartment. The furniture was comfortable, the apartment well equipped. Our stay was only for 2 nights so we were not able to utilize everything. Next time we go to Paihia we would definitely stay at Swallows Nest.
The only thing we found a bit disconcerting was the steep driveway, but it was worth going up in order to enjoy such a nice place.

Hi Gerald, Thank you for your review and your description, apologies for the up hill walk but hope the views made up for it.

Comfortable suite with a lovely view from high above. Very close to everything but up a steep hill, so having a car was nice. Jim & Janet were very helpful and Jim's suggestion for golf was fantastic, prettiest course we have ever played on.

We stayed three nights in this generously sized accommodation that included bedroom, lounge, kitchen, bathroom views looking south across the water. Walk to Paihia shops/restaurants/waterfront. Very quiet at night. Hosts very helpful with touring information and suggestions.

Me and my fiancé escape Auckland bound for Paihia at every opportunity. We always have a good scout around at accommodation quality and prices and this time we decided to book at Swallows Nest.

When we arrived we were greeted by both Janet and Jim, who are both very friendly and helpful hosts. They showed us through the apartment, rattled off everything we needed to know and then answered any additional questions that had (walkways to the seafront from the apartment, what’s new in the area, any activities this weekend etc.). Anything that they didn’t have the answer to, they were quick to point us in the right direction so we could find an answer.

The apartment was dry, warm, clean, and tidy, not massive but more than enough for a 3-4 day stay. It has a generous size double bedroom (and very comfy bed), bathroom/toilet with a large walk-in shower, living/dining area and kitchen. We took some food up with us to reduce the cost of eating out (most places have 15% surcharge over the long weekend), the apartment had all the necessary amenities for us to cook our food etc. In addition to the dining table inside the apartment there is also a small deck/patio area with a wooden table and chairs that lookout over the bay.

Janet and Jim live above the apartment, we didn’t hear them walking around etc. so the sound proofing is good. There is free wireless internet, although the connection in the living/dining and kitchen area often dropped off and we found ourselves back in 3G and 4G. When you are in the bedroom the connection was perfect. Jim told us that the router is located in the main house above the apartment bedroom which is what caused the signal to drop off at the front of the apartment. This could be remedied with an expander placed in the apartment.. But in all reality if you are looking to sit in the apartment and play on the internet for extended periods of time when you are in the beautiful Bay of Islands then I would question why you are there ;).

We had no concerns at all about the cleanliness of the apartment. The 2 chocolate muffins upon arrival were a nice touch too :). Overall we highly recommend staying at Swallows Nest and wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again on our next adventure.
