“Wonderful Day”
Review of Kaipara Cruises

Reviewed 31 March 2015

We had a wonderful day. Went up to Port Albert by coach and boarded the Kewpie Too. The trip took 6 hours but we enjoyed every minute of it. The skipper gave a detailed commentary all the way down the harbour. The crew (Sam) was very obliging and helpful. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the history of our country.

This is a 10 hour round trip from Helensville to Dargaville by boat, with a coach ride return to Helensville. It's a big day, but well worth the effort. I think it only runs in summer...
The Kaipara is one of the largest harbours in the world covering 947 square kilometres at high tide (Wikipedia). The onboard commentary was excellent, covering Maori history and the European history. The Kaipara was an important harbour for European settlers - logging of the surrounding forests being the main attraction.
I particularly enjoyed seeing the birdlife - it's a very important stretch of water for migratory birds, as well as the critically endangered fairy tern, Caspian terns. Most recently some vagrant pelicans have taken up residence in the north section where the Wairoa river enters the harbour. We were lucky enough to see them! Optional BBQ lunch is available, or you can bring your own.
We had a great day, and came away feeling we'd learnt so much more about this amazing harbour in Auckland's backyard. Would highly recommend.

Thank Penne T
