We have just returned from a brief trip to New Zealand, during which we stayed 5 nights at the Skycity Hotel. The hotel is centrally located, right next to the Sky Tower. It is about 200m from Queen Street - the main shopping area - and about 10 minute walk to the Viaduct Harbour and Britomart - a new shopping and entertainment development and a transport hub. While we had a rental vehicle, we seldom used it in the city as most attractions of interest to us were within a walking distance. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to the Maritime Museum (on the harbour), several hotels and Auckland Museum. The shuttle departs from the hotel every 45 minutes - ask the Concierge for a copy of the timetable. The hotel itself is modern and clean. Free wireless internet is available in the lobby and there is a free iPad available to hotel guests. Our room was very spacious, with two double beds and a sofa and quite a large bathroom. Despite hotel's very central location our room was really quiet. The beds were very comfortable and offered a good night sleep. Overall the room was reasonably clean, but during our stay its servicing fell short of the standard of other similar hotels. Nothing seems to be replenished - we used the milk to make coffee on our second day and never got another one. Similarly, the empty bottle of shampoo was never replaced (thankfully, we always carry our own toiletries). I don't think our bed linen was changed once in 5 days. The bath towels were not exactly white and had various stains on them. The iron in the wardrobe should have been replaced or repaired as it had a frayed cable, unsafe to use. Unlike room service, reception staff were efficient and helpful. Overall, it was a pleasant stay, but it would have been great if there was more attention to detail. TIP: Valet parking costs NZ$30 per day and you can get in and out as many times as you want. Alternatively, if you only use your car once a day, at the hotel reception 'exchange' the parking ticket you pick up when you enter the parking under the hotel for a pre-paid one. It will cost you NZ$20 (for one exit from the car park), as opposed to NZ$40 you would normally pay.
