Description: "A passion for flavour and dedication to detail" Welcome to MASU, the exciting Japanese robata restaurant and bar located in the Federal Street dining precinct. MASU brings atmosphere, passion and a contemporary twist to the traditional robata style of cooking over an open charcoal grill. My philosophy is simple - use fresh local ingredients, enhance the natural flavours of each dish and let the food speak for itself. This pure approach to cuisine is reflected in our clean, natural decor. Add to this a lively, informal atmosphere and you have a beautifully bold and dramatically different style of Japanese dining in the heart of Auckland. Nic Watt

Dined here twice. Sashimi selection outstanding.
Black cod and Kia ora salmon dishes delicious.
Rice a little dry, have to ask for it as not automatically provided with main course dishes.
Very noisy if you sit near the food prep area as you have to endure the shouts from the kitchen area. Is not a quiet intimate dining experience.
Second night a dish failed to appear, was told it was a machine error. Staff apologised.
All in all highly recommend.

I have been to many Japanese restaurants in my life and none have come as close to perfect as this did. If you are to go to one of Auckland's best locations, come here.

We had a package as part of East Day Spa. We had a lovely one hour massage then got sent here for dinner. Unfortunately as soon as we got there they told us we were 20 minutes late and they needed the table by 9. Not really our fault. We were sat at a table which was right in the middle of the restaurant, and we were constantly bumped by people walking through, waitresses, waiters and public. Edamame Beans were put on our table so we thought they were complimentary, however when we left we were charged for them. The food we had was nice, but because of the hectic service and noise around us it was very hard to enjoy. We actually went across the road to Rebo for something else to eat sitting outside where it was peaceful and a little cooler. This meal was a big disappointment to us, we eat a lot of Japanese and have had much better..even in Hamilton.

Have tried Japanese restaurants all over the world, and this is among the top two. MASU has innovative as well as the usual fare. For example, one dish we had was tempura scampi. Scampi was in small pieces, light batter, and served on a bed of what we thought was lightly deep fried rice noodles, but had a unique flavor. When we asked what type of noodle, Waitress told us this is not noodle. Rather a chef very finely grates a Japanese radish and then allows it to dry, before quickly fried in new oil. Every dish was outstanding and not seen before. Not cheap, but well worth it, except perhaps Cloudy Bay Sauvignon blanc @ $95 a bottle. Service excellent, also atmosphere.

Had a chance for a solo dinner at Masu so sat at the bar and watched the chefs in action with a gorgeous glass of Chenin Blanc from Pyramid Valley so a very good start. First up was chefs sashimi of 3 fish which was stunningly presented and very tasty indeed but I am partial to a more thinly sliced version than this chunky cut. Miso soup perfect and broccolini lovely but the highlight was the small dish of deep fried crab which would bring me back again ( and possibly again) I am already looking forward to creating another chance to come back so can highly recommend
