Description: Xuxu Dumpling Bar (say "Su-su") is one of the city's small gems, a cosy table-service bar just across Commerce Street from its older sibling Cafe Hanoi. With it's deliciously, delicate, handmade dumplings, luscious cocktails and new and unusual wines, Xuxu Dumpling Bar is a little haven tucked away in the bustling Britomart precinct.

Its a quirky little place near Britomart and even at 6:30 the place was buzzing. They can pack a lot of people into a small area but we weren't too uncomfortable. (But if you are after an intimate dinner this place is not for you.) First the cocktails - they are expensive, but if you are willing to splash out for something different these are not your usual fare. I can recommend the Xuxu Martini - refreshing fruity with a peppery after bite, and the Harajuku Dreaming - plum wine and marmalade flavours. There is a good selection of wine and beer available for the less adventurous. Obviously you have to like dumplings if you are going to eat here. They are reasonably priced and arrive pretty quickly, freshly steamed in stacked baskets. We had the prawn and ginger which were delicious and the steaming pork buns which were a bit harder to eat but very tasty. The surprise of the evening was choc fondant dumplings, a delicious concoction of chocolate and walnut in a sticky dumpling - who knew!

I go to Xuxu for lunch quite often and am never disappointed. I usually go for either the chicken or the beef fried dumplings (I always go fried over steamed but I've been told they're great too), with my personal fave being the beef and lemongrass. The pork buns are really good (3 serve), with proper chunks of pork in. The star is the dessert dumplings though, they come out looking like little pumpkins and are filled with chocolate ganache, amazing.
The wine here is also really good if you're having a boozy lunch! Good value at about $8-9 for 6 dumplings, which is obviously more than barilla or new flavour, but the quality is worth it!
Cute vibe inside and outdoor seating too for sunny days. One of my fave lunch spots in the city. (Can usually get a table without booking but would recommend booking on Friday lunch)

Nice idea as a venue. The cocktails need a bit more variation and the price is a bit on the high side. The dumplings are a bit average. Nice spot to sit and have a drink and a different idea !
