Disgrace to New Zealand

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Mar 2017via mobile
We live in Wellington and often visit Auckland. Having stayed at several hostels around town I have to say that this one is by far the worst, and should only be optioned as a last resort. That it is priced similar to far superior options just makes it seem worse. In fact, with the effort NZ Tourism puts in to make sure visitors get quality and safety for their money, I'm surprised a place like this even exists in NZ. It's an embarrassment and a disgrace. All the other one star reviews will tell you why specifically.

Stayed in a private double room on the third floor. Strange set up with two wings at each side of the building. Our wing had 6 rooms and shared toilet, shower & kitchen area. Clean enough. However the rooms have obviously been made cheaply therefore a small gap between the wall & ceiling so could hear absolutely everything in the room next to us.

$4 for 24hrs of average signal of wifi.

Not sure what the problem was with the elevator but it definitely needs attention!!

Having dinner with friends in the city & decided we just needed a bed - biggest mistake EVER!
Was booked into a room on the 6th floor, lift wasn't in service (there was no mention of this on the online booking or confirmation). Along with myself & luggage, I had to get mymother with disability up 12 sets of stairs. Walked into the most filthy room, that looked like it had never been wiped down, the bathroom was even worse. It was extremely hot and there was no aircon or fan. There is a bar on ground level, on a Sunday night it was extremely loud until 2.30am. We barely slept and left just after 6am just to get out of the place. Everywhere stank and the carpet looked and felt 100 years old, it was safer to leave shoes on than to touch anything.
I complained to the manager and she basically couldn't care less. She said lifts were out for one week but another permanent guest said it had been out for 3 weeks when we arrived. I am ashamed being from New Zealand and backpackers visiting our country are just treated as money in the door. This dirty place should be condemned.

I stayed here twice. The first when I arrived in Auckland for a night. That stay wasn't too bad. All the rooms are set in its own apartment which is ok but there's a weird smell and they could be cleaned better. That night at 11pm a male cleaner came into the room which is very inappropriate to start with. He also stank of booze and made my roommate uncomfortable.

The second time I stayed was a week later and I was in the same room. It still smelt funny and the fridge still had all the same food in it yet no one had been there longer than a few days! This time I was in the 8 bed room there were only 3 of us in there which was nice but then at 4am the girl from reception and her friend came in to sleep and woke us all up and continued to be noisy for a while. Not very professional.

All in all I would avoid this place. Yes the location is good and there's a 3 dollar meal at night but it need a massive overhaul in so many ways.

Staff are unhelpful, easily confused and generally don't care.
Lift was out of service (required major upgrade won't be back for a while). Had to climb to sixth floor with all bags.
Bed was good but did not look like pictures, room was old and carpet was quite dirty, it hadn't been cleaned in a while. Pictures show that room has towels, there were no towels and non for hire as apparently they had run out, some of our company had to go out and buy there own.

Room was warm but we couldn't leave window open due to loud noise on street.
We were still woken up periodically till about 02:30 due to late night shouting from clubs/pubs.

Kitchen was completely inadequate, old crap stuff everywhere. Fridge was way to small to fit food from all the people in the surrounding rooms.

I don't mind outdated it if is well kept but this place is a disaster. Filled holes in wall with plaster everywhere and lots not filled in. Dirty feel everywhere. Everything is really worn out and crap.

Pay an extra $10-$20 and stay in another hostel.

First hostel we have stayed in and the worst. The room in the picture is very misleading. Our room was tiny, had no window or ventilation, and I wondered what would happen if there was a fire. The place is a death trap waiting to happen. The shower was disgusting. The people in the rooms next to us were loud and talking all night. Sleeping under a bridge would be better than Fat Camel and I don't mean to insult any bridges. Ugh...beware!!
