Description: David Thompson’s casual, fun and accessible Thai street food restaurant, Long Chim opened its doors at the end of 2015. Bookings can be made for lunch and dinner and there is always availability for walk-ins. Located in the basement of the State Building on the corner of St George Terrace and Barrack Street, the 190-seat restaurant has a large open-plan kitchen, cocktail bar and a mix of intimate dining alcoves, communal style tables and counter seats. Long Chim means to ‘come and taste’. The restaurant’s fast service style combines with the sounds of clashing woks and the beating rhythm of the pestle as it hits the mortar. It’s a kind of music that leads you to laugh a little louder, stay a little longer and try something new each time. Drop in for lunch, a snack and drink, or stay for dinner and work your way through the menu, with a selection of Thai street food options including noodles, curries, stir-fries, deep-fried and grilled dishes. Signature dishes include crunchy school prawns with herbs, shallots and chilies; beef skewers with cumin, coriander and turmeric; or for something more substantial, sour orange curry of fish or minced beef with chillies, garlic, holy basil and fried egg. We also have our "maa long chim" menu, which means to come, sample and taste, and comprises of a selection of Long Chim’s best dishes, and is available lunch and dinner.

1. There are no second chances for a first impression....We booked in advance for 7:15pm , however, while walking around the city we came close to the location and as I was aware the place was already open we decided to see if we could instead dine earlier. I politely made that very clear on entering and the chap on the desk assured it was fine and asked if we'd like to have a drink first or go straight thru to the main dining area. We opted for the former, so after waiting at the bar to order our drinks, we consumed these and then asked if we could go thru to dine, again the server said fine, we did go in and then someone else told us no we will have to wait up to an hour even though we saw tables available. Accepting this politely, we went back to the bar, even the server there was surprised to see us back.

We kept having to flag someone down to order more drinks, frankly quite upset by now but we soldiered on. At no time did anyone suggest if we'd like to eat earlier we can order and eat at the bar. When we finally figured out we could do this we flagged someone down and ordered.

2. It would be helpful if the menu provided some sort of graphic advising the Spice levels for each dish, of note we are fine with various levels I was just surprised this was not the case as such we found some items plain (spring rolls) and others more spicy. (the flabby fish cakes)

3. Personally, I don't feel the level of service and comfort meets the expectations of an outlet in a five star hotel. However, obviously the place is popular and I can only be baffled as to why. Good Thai food is available throughout Perth city with plenty of better options available.

The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. We shared the banana blossom salad, pork hock parlow and grilled barramundi between the 2 of us. Didn't order any rice as then we would have has to limit ourselves to only 2 courses! After another cocktail we shared a banana roti dessert. The restaurant was full on a Thursday night.

The food was very POOR.
I really just want to save people the effort of going here. Bookings are essential as it is busy, but the food is not good.

We had the set menu:
Entree - skewers- 80% inedible fat and fishcakes broken into tiny pieces, no spice at all.

Main - exceptionally fatty & chewy lamb ribs (we left them), fish coated in the sweetest sickliest sauce (no spice at all) and the best of the 3 was a chicken curry - the chicken was shredded and again no spice.

$85 per person

Expensive, very average service and terrible food.

I’m so disappointed as I’d heard such great things.
