Review of Long Chim Perth

Long Chim Perth
Ranked #80 of 1,601 Restaurants in Perth
Price range: USD 13 - USD 22
Description: David Thompson’s casual, fun and accessible Thai street food restaurant, Long Chim opened its doors at the end of 2015. Bookings can be made for lunch and dinner and there is always availability for walk-ins. Located in the basement of the State Building on the corner of St George Terrace and Barrack Street, the 190-seat restaurant has a large open-plan kitchen, cocktail bar and a mix of intimate dining alcoves, communal style tables and counter seats. Long Chim means to ‘come and taste’. The restaurant’s fast service style combines with the sounds of clashing woks and the beating rhythm of the pestle as it hits the mortar. It’s a kind of music that leads you to laugh a little louder, stay a little longer and try something new each time. Drop in for lunch, a snack and drink, or stay for dinner and work your way through the menu, with a selection of Thai street food options including noodles, curries, stir-fries, deep-fried and grilled dishes. Signature dishes include crunchy school prawns with herbs, shallots and chilies; beef skewers with cumin, coriander and turmeric; or for something more substantial, sour orange curry of fish or minced beef with chillies, garlic, holy basil and fried egg. We also have our "maa long chim" menu, which means to come, sample and taste, and comprises of a selection of Long Chim’s best dishes, and is available lunch and dinner.

My dinner wasn't that great. I may have ordered the wrong thing on the menu. My partner had the Pad thai and loved it. The decor is fun and I highly recommend it for a drink.

We walked in after work - 5.30pm and were seated quickly. The service was excellent, good knowledge of the wine list, dishes and we received attention throughout the evening.

We were surprised at the cost of the dishes and the cost of the wine list. However the dishes we picked were delicious, note the roast duck dish was very small.

Really enjoyed the food, the 'Chive Cakes' and 'Soft Shell Crab Salad' were the highlights.

My wife and I went here at around 9pm on a Sunday evening. The place was packed - great atmosphere. Very similar to a streetscape in Bangkok.
Staff were friendly and attentive and got us seated quite quickly. We had the Tom Yum Fish, crab fried rice, glass noodle salad and pork & green beans. The food was tasty, very similar to the taste you might expect in Thailand. We like hot food so this was to our liking but might not be everyones taste. While the ingredients were certainly fresh and the food full of flavour we thought some of it was a little salty.
Compared to Sydney or Melbourne the cost around $160 (1 x drink each included) was a bit steep and certainly would have got similar for a quite a bit less cost on the east coast.
We'd go again (it was my 2nd time) but probably not as much as we might if the pricing was a bit more reasonable.

The atmosphere is great, the food is super tasty, but the price is high. The duck curry tasted great but as most of it was some knuckley bones with a tiny amount of duck to be prised off it, I probably got five forks of actual duck. The chicken was far more generous and a more realistic serving size.

This was the second visit to Long Chim. We were there early and the service was ok. Our food was very ordinary! Our fish cakes we are sure were cooked the day before and reheated. They were dry and hardly edible. The wine list is very expensive. We had a good shiraz for $70! We probably wont be back as there are too many other restaurants to enjoy!
