We stayed at the Broome Bird Observatory over the July school holidays, due to the lack of 2 bedroom accommodation in Broome over this time.

We were pleasantly surprised by the absolute natural beauty of this place and the tranquility of the surroundings.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom cabin with our 2 kids (4 & 2 y.o) and though we are not bird enthusiasts by any means we enjoyed bushwalking around the park and marking off birds on the “bird checklist” provided.

The road out to the park had only just been graded and was quite slippery with sand. Our Hyundai ix35 has a little bit of a rough time getting out there, so I would definitely recommend a bit of a heartier car than we have, maybe an AWD or 4WD.

The room was basic and clean, but due to our visit being in July it was actually very cold. So if you are visiting over winter do not forget warm clothes.

All the visitors to the park were very friendly, they even had a nightly catch up for guests to discuss the birds they have spotted through the day.

We had a great time here and would definitely return!

My wife and I spent three days at BBO last month, doing three tours and spending time wandering their excellent walking tracks. We saw well over a 100 species including a few lifers for us, and the scenery was breathtaking. We really appreciated the hospitality and knowledge of Nigel and his team, who not only found us the birds but taught us so much about their ecology and behaviour. Can't recommend it highly enough.

This has to be by far the best place in Australia to see, and find out about, the migratory waders that gather in Roebuck Bay prior to migration to the northern hemisphere.
The accommodation is basic - run by voluntary contributions, with the focus on the birds and birders.
The food supplied (I was on their wader identification course) was top class, with a different cuisine each day.
The course was extremely informative and well run, with the staff being helpful and knowledgeable.
Not for anyone wanting luxury accommodation - but an absolute must for the keen birder.

We stayed at the Broome Bird Observatory as my 9 year old daughter who loves birdwatching wanted to stay there for her birthday. The camp hosts were very friendly and the bush camp site was lovely. The amenities were very interesting full of frogs and the place was alive with wildlife. The camp hosts are helpful but don't advise on birds as this is not their area of expertise. The bird observatory staff who may have been able to engage my daughter and give her some info about birds were very rude another camper told us to come to the bird count in the evening, when we arrived we were stared at and then completely ignored. You may be able to book a tour but the people don't seem interested in engaging novice birdwatchers. The bush camp however was lovely and the rating is purely for the camp and camp hosts.

If you want Caravan Park style camping then go into Broome. The BBO is set up for tents and camper trailers ie small sites, no on tap water and no power. However this is just the way we like it. Clean facilities that you share with the wildlife (frogs) and access to the shade house overlooking bird ponds. Our fifth trip there and we will be back.
