We stayed at Hotel Sophia on the night of January 8th, 2014. Arrived near midnight because we went to Phillips Island for the Penguin Parade. We called the hotel in advance to ask where we could park to check in and they said to park in front of the hotel. Because it was late and we were leaving early next morning, we asked the receptionist whether it was ok for us to park our car in the meter spot in front of the hotel overnight. The receptionist told us that we would have to put money into the meter or move the car by 7.30AM otherwise we would receive a ticket. He repeated that information several time, reminding us to put money in the parking meter by 7.30AM. The next morning (of the day of our international flight back home) we went down to put money into the meter at 7.20AM and realized that our car has been towed. Turns out, during the week, the meter spots in front of the hotel are in towing zone between 7AM and 7.30AM. We had to take a taxi to the impound location, pay to get our car and pay for the parking violation ticket.
The misinformation we have received from your staff had cost us nearly $500. In addition, we nearly missed our flight.
By the time we left, the manager was no where to be found. Upon coming home, we wrote a long email to the hotel only to receive a message saying they looked into the issue and found that their staff has done nothing wrong. We should have parked in the hotel parking which was a few blocks away.
As travellers we rely on our hotel for information. In this case Hotel Sophia failed in every way to provide their customers with the necessary assistance and we are extremely dissatisfied with the way they handle customer satisfaction.
Add to that the tiny room, the hair found in the bathroom and poor breakfast. We will not come back.

I have stayed at Hotel Sophia quite a few times now, basically because of the convenient location and the breakfasts. Price is also usually very competitive. Easily the worst thing about the hotel has been the service, specifically at reception. It is nearly always understaffed - once when I was checking in (not on my last visit) had to wait 5-6 minutes for someone to appear. If you can overlook that very significant deficiency, the Hotel Sophia does tick a few other boxes.
Location is very good: close to Southern Cross station in but still in a quiet part of King St. I have not had a problem with extraneous noise. The rooms are always clean and usually spacious for a budget hotel (they seem to vary in size a bit). Firm queen-size bed and a couple of comfy hairs. The odd thing out during most recent stay was the tiny and almost unusable desk/table. There are other nice touches you don't expect and rarely get: a teapot, espresso coffee machine (capsules), even chocolate mints on the pillow. They appear to be making an effort.
Breakfast is included in the tariff and is good. Hot buffet plus healthy cereal options like muesli, Weet-Bix, yoghurt and fruit.

We had a horrible night at the hotel. There was this very loud machine turning on every 3 minutes for about 30 seconds - impossible to sleep. The guy at the reception recognized this but couldn't do anything about it. Could not speak to a manager. Breakfast was very poor. Tried to contact the hotel after our stay by email - received no reply...

This is one of the worst hotels I have stayed in if not the worst ever for following reasons:

1. Reception was rarely staffed. There was a bell at reception but it took ages until someone turned up. When staff turned up, they were not very helpful nor friendly.
2. Walls are so thin you can hear one person urinating and others talking as if you're in the same room with them.
3. Cleanliness: not sure what the point is of changing clean towels but not cleaning bathroom, not changing dirty cups, etc...?
4. Location: it's near gentlemen's clubs so I didn't really feel comfortable walking around on my own as a single female in the evening.
5. Value for money? Definitely NOT! It's also NOT a 4star hotel!

Have stayed here numerous times before the renovations. Seems with those the warmth has gone.Staff are nowhere near as friendly. We had a shared bathroom and toilet paper would have been nice instead of hunting for it. Breakfast was a total let down. If you are on a tight budget this would be ok with breakfast provided and it is close to Etihad Stadium and Southern Cross Station. Not high on my list anymore.
