There is a cider bar on the roof and downstairs there is a spacious old pub with plenty of comfortable seating. The food is nothing to write home about (but we were hungry, so we tried it). The beer selction is great though. Recommended for a beer or two and an hour or so to relax as you make your way through Melbourne - it is right across the street from Federation Square and St Patrick's Cathedral, so it makes for a great break!

We read a write up of this bar (part of Young and Jackson's) in The Age and decided to have a look ourselves. Although it's on the roof, there's no view and it feels very enclosed. It is carpetted with fake grass, which is an amusing touch. The ciders from the Coldstream brewery were really lovely. However the bar is used by smokers which greatly detracts from it's already limited appeal. Food was served but who would want to eat in a smokery? Staff were very friendly. This was a novelty visit but there doesn't seem much reason for a non smoker to return.

Happened to go to this bar by accident but really enjoyed the wide selection of ciders & craft beers. Will go back if we get a chance.

Our last review of Young and Jackson's was 10 months ago, but our most recent visit was better than ever. The two of us shared a tapas platter for lunch. We've had the platter in the past, but the platter currently being served is totally different from the previous ones. It consisted of three each wild mushroom arancini balls, sauteed prawns with garlic, chilli, and parsley served on toast, spiced lamb kofta with sumac yoghurt, and duck shanks with sweet soy and orange sauce ($22). An absolute bargain. We felt compelled to ask the server to please tell the manager or chef how wonderful we thought the platter was. Many people may pass the place by because it is at Melbourne's most busy downtown intersection and deluged by tourists, but the food is far above tourist fare.

I'd been eating steaks in Melbourne for 3 weeks, during a recent business trip. Mmh! tasty and tender, especially cooked "blue", a European weakness of mine. Then I tried the rump steak at Young & Jackson's. Tough as an old boot! When I sent it back the cook replied that it was normal for rump to be "firm", but cooking it more would tender it up.
I asked for the bill and left.

Luckily there was a Mac Donalds next door. What a disappointing way to end my stay in Victoria.
