“Beautiful hotel, but extras can be costly”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

My husband and I stayed here for five days and thought the hotel itself was beautiful and very comfortable. However, I find it really annoying when a pricey hotel like this charges extra for everything. Wireless internet was $100 for the 5 days and a guest for breakfast was an astonishing $40. Coffee to go was also an extra charge.

The staff was very helpful, including the two guest services agents who each spent about 45 minutes in our room trying to get the wireless to work. Apparently they just "upgraded" their broadband service and it isn't working right with certain computers such as my macbook air. They did loan us an iPad when they couldn't get the wireless to work with my computer... that was a nice touch (and no extra charge for that!)

Thank you for taking the time to review us after your recent stay. We are so pleased that you found our staff to be helpful and able to assist innovatively with your connectivity whilst in the hotel. We will certainly let them know that you appreciated their assistance. We only charge for items that guests need. There are always helpful ways to include items in your room rate. The ideal package for your preferences would be the Perfectly Langham Package bookable online which includes internet access and breakfast as well. We do hope you’ll enjoy a stay with us again if you’re visiting Australia.

We had booked 2 rooms for 3 of us for 4 nights. Breakfast was included. It was our anniversary and our daughters birthday. We received champagne and chocolate cake which was lovely.

We had a side view of the river which was beautiful. The rooms were very elegant and comfortable with beds/ bedding that we wanted to stay in all day!

Couldnt fault the service, everyone was friendly and attentive - particularly the concierge upstairs and the bell boy service downstairs were fantastic - so helpful and friendly:)

Breakfast buffet was included in our 'deal' and was super. Would have liked breakfast in our room on one of the days when we had an early start but this wasnt allowed because it was included in the price which we thought was a real shame and rather odd. Stayed in many hotels in different countries with inclusive breakfast but never had room service refused before.

The first evening we had a buffet meal in the Melba restaurant - expensive but a good selection and good quality - something for everyone. I love seafood but thought, generally, that it was a bit watery and tasteless (maybe previously frozen?) but anyway there was plenty to eat so I was very satisfied.
We had room service on the last night which was excellent.

Had spa treatments which were great (cheaper mid-week) and enjoyed the pool / jacuzzi and sun deck very much. Good gym too.

Had a fabulous stay and would love to go back :)

Room Tip: River view is lovely.

Stayed here on the week of the Grand Prix. Initial impressions weren't that great as the entrance is hidden away down a side road off the main river frontage and the entrance foyer is definitely dated. This was soon turned around by the friendly welcome and an upgrade to a suite. This was followed up by a complementary birthday cake turning up just after we got to the our room. Nice touch.

Room was very impressive and well appointed, although it didn't have direct river view as we had booked and perhaps the underlying reason for the upgrade. Had a few minor gripes with the room with the drinking glasses dirty and the hairdryer not working but both were sorted out very quickly.

The gym and swimming pool could both do with some investment and the sun terrace is a complete embarrassment for a 5 star hotel. The bar is also mediocre.

Breakfast was outstanding.

Overall I'm not sure this provides value for money as it lacks the wow factor compared to the newish Langham in Hong Kong which is a fraction of the price. Good to experience once but I wouldn't rush back.

Thank you for your review. We’re so pleased you enjoyed the cake and the upgrade as an unexpected birthday surprise. We’re also pleased to hear that you found the breakfast to be outstanding. We do apologise for the situation with the glasses and the hairdryer – we will certainly pass this information on to our Housekeeping staff - but we are pleased to hear that this was quickly sorted out. Our hotel is known for its classical elegance and the foyer is designed in that style and is very popular with our wedding parties because of the huge sweeping staircase. You will be pleased to know that we are looking at redeveloping the pool area over winter. We do hope to see you again.

The Langham is situated in the popular Southbank area of Melbourne, on the south banks of the River and about 10 mins walk to the main shopping area. There are lots of restaurants along the Southbank. The main railway Station is on the opposite side of the river also, plus access to the circular free tram is there aswell. The hotel is very elegant, as soon as you go through the main entrance and are confronted by the escalators to the reception area. There is an executive lounge on the 24th floor which provides complimentary alcohol in the evenings along with canapés. Breakfast is also available there aswell, quite a reasonable selection. Our River room was not available until the afternoon but we were given access to the exec lounge after our early morning arrival. Our room had a good view of the River and the area to the north of it, it was clean, reasonable space with a great uncomplicated shower. The staff were very friendly and efficient. This hotel is an expensive hotel to stay at, but you are in an excellent location to explore the city. If there was one criticism, albeit a minor one, was housekeeping, we went for breakfast one day before 9am leaving a privacy card on the door only to come back to a card left to say that they could not clean our room and for us to ring a number to arrange cleaning, then the next day, our room wasn't cleaned until mid afternoon. As far as I am concerned, we are the customers and they should work around us!

This is a nice property. Great location. Good service. Plenty of great outlets. What makes any hotel stay special is when a hotel does something out of the ordinary. I checked in on business a few weeks ago with a partially broken notebook (the screen was dead). I told the front desk checking in, and the next morning the hotel found a screen for me to use!!! Like I said, that small gesture made my stay memorable.
