Hotel Ibis Melbourne Little Bourke Street
Ranked #83 of 160 Hotels in Melbourne
Reviewed 5 March 2012

The room was not huge but manageable and the situation was good, near the Southern Cross Station, where the shuttle bus drops you from the airport, it’s only a few hundred yards but if your hotel is further away, there’s a free minibus shuttle. It’s also a short walk to the free tourist bus and tram, a real help in getting to know Melbourne. The rest of Oz was having the worst summer in years but Melbourne had a heat wave, what did shock us though was the prices in Australia, as the Dollar is far too strong, Melbourne is even dearer for some reason, I paid £10 for a pint at one point, especially hard as Australian chemical beer is undrinkable and having to eat out all the time was hitting our budget, so we later moved onto apartments and self catering, which saved money. One pleasant surprise was that the locals and most Australians were so helpful and friendly, including reception.
We seldom eat in the hotel, it can be expensive and claustrophobic and we found an excellent café in the Bourke Street Mall on the next block, it had free WiFi, it’s criminal that such a big hotel doesn’t. There was no safe but a free safe deposit box at reception and you used your room key to operative the lift, which seems common in Oz. The only major complaint was the disco next door on Saturday night, we were a few floors up and didn’t expect any noise, in a city centre hotel always expect noise and go for height. We always travel with earplugs and shut the noise out but management should warn customers, without the earplugs it was deafening but only one night thankfully.

Room Tip: Try and get as far away from the club next door as possible

Dear gbf1

Thank you for taking to time to write about your experience in Melbourne. We are delighted to hear that the hotel and its location was a great base for getting around the city.
The Australian dollar is certainly very strong and this is something the world has not seen for a long time. As a result visitors can find conversions and prices an unbudgeted challenge.
Wifi setup in Australia is different to other parts of the world and comparably is expensive. As a brand within Australia we are currently reviewing options to consider access to some free internet in the public areas. We anticipate that this will be available in the coming months.
We wish you all the best with your travel and thank you.

Kind regards
Mary Ellen O’Malley

With a lot of experiences in hotels, both internationally and within Australia, I must say that this has been one of the most amazing stays I have had the pleasure of enjoying. We were given a complimentary upgrade to a king room, and access to the hotels wonderful amenities, including a rooftop courtyard and well-fitted gymnasium. The service was absolutely exemplary, and the staff went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as it could be.

Reviewed 21 February 2012

my partner booked this hotel for somewhere central for us to stay before leaving Melbourne and heading to the airport the next day.
First of all, the taxi driver took us to the wrong Ibis hotel as there are two in melbourne which the other hotel advised us after 5mins of trying to find our booking so bear this in mind if you get a taxi here!
We were charged $159 (monday night mind you!) for a room with a queen bed - i have not seen a hotel room so small in a long time! For the money we were not impressed at all with the size or look of the room, i would have expected a much higher standard from a well known hotel chain.
My partner went downstairs to express his dissapointment, there was no apology and we were offered an upgrade to a king room at a fee. after seeing the room we were not interested in any kind of upgraded, and we were refunded our money back.
The reaction from the staff was not one of apology or shock... i'm guessing this happens quite often.
we were then able to book an amazing huge self contained apartment around the corner for cheaper!

Dear Hollie on Holidays

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent experience at the hotel.
We apologise that the taxi took you to the wrong hotel. We do suggest that guests when booking branded properties with multiple locations in cities avail drivers with the street address of the hotel to try and prevent this situation.

Ibis hotels pride themselves on providing accommodation in the economy sector of the market, where rooms are compact and the hotels are centrally located. Ibis hotels worldwide are not based on the self contained apartment style business model.

Staff at times are required to manage guests who have selected the hotel and find that the Ibis brand style of accommodation does not suit their requirements or expectations. In ensuring that the best possible customer service was offered, staff provided choices within the range of offerring available. Having facilitated in offering the best available service, which was not to your expectations, basis on the terms and conditions of your pre booked accommodation staff on this occasion were able to facilitate a refund enabling you to make an alternative choice in keeping with your expectations.

Take care
