“Lovely old hotel in the heart of Melbourne”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2012

This hotel certainly has all the character of a bygone era. The room we stayed in was large and comfortable and the decor was in keeping with the architecture of the hotel. We did not eat in the hotel as it is so close to so many other cafes and restaurants, but the dining room looked exquisite and unfortunately the high tea for which the Windsor is renown was booked out so we didn't get a chance to experience it. Book in advance if you want the high tea. Right outside our door was the free city circle tram that takes you to downtown Melbourne and right around to the Docklands area and back up through LaTrobe Street. After watching an AFL game, we enjoyed a beer or two at the Cricketers Arms which is attached to the hotel. Lots of cricketing memorabilia. A very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with views over Spring Street and Parliament House and away from the lift wells w...

Dear Carroll92,

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay at The Hotel Windsor.

It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and found our rooms to be spacious and comfortable.

As you mentioned we do have a selection of room types all with different views. At the time of booking we are always able to confirm a Spring Street view for a small additional fee.

Once again thank you and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Hotel Windsor when next in Melbourne.

Kind Regards

My husband and I really enjoyed our one night stay at The Windsor Hotel. It was impressive. I was also pleasantly surprised when my hubby turned on the tele and saw a welcome sign as well as my name appearing on the TV screen in our room. We hadn't seen this before and thought that it added a nice touch to make our stay even better. Breakfast was really lovely and the staff were courteous and helpful. The only real hiccups were that the hot water in the shower took a while to heat up and room service was a bit of a wait.

My husband and I just stayed here for two nights on the weekend. We were mesmerised by the the charm and warm feel that the hotel has. The staff were extremely helpful. We were not fortunate enough to try the restaurant due to time commitments and our only other complaint would be... we weren't able to stay longer. Thank you so much.

We stayed at the Windsor for a relaxing week in Melbourne and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. On the weekends the pianist on the grand piano in the lobby was a particularly charming touch. We ate at the restaurant - the Chateau Briand was very tender and cooked to perfection, though we were rather surprised to be asked several times if we wanted it "bloody" after asking for rare. Perhaps they have had complaints in the past from others, who knows.
The bed was very large and comfortable, and this is the only hotel I have ever stayed in where a wide range of pillows were available to choose from. We were perfectly happy with our lovely plump down pillows.
We also enjoyed the "Australiana" on the walls - paintings and portraits of a former era, and the history of the hotel, knowing about the previous prime ministers who have stayed here adds a certain something.
We didn't have the afternoon tea on this occasion, but have had it before, and it is a rather luxurious treat.
Perhaps we were more relaxed than other reviewers, being on holiday, but we thoroughly enjoyed the friendly staff in the hotel, not to mention the great location within reasonable walking distance of shops, galleries, museums and the main sporting venues of Melbourne. Internet access was not great, and our time seemed to run out rather mysteriously, but overall we were very happy in the gorgeous old dame of a hotel.
