Stayed here because it was a last minute trip and my usual hotels were unavailable. It's all quite clean and new. I was on a low floor so there was nothing but an office block for a view. The rooms are quite small and felt a little cramped but they do manage to get a kitchenette in there which would be helpful for some. There are a few quirks to the layout, the television is to the side of the bed which can lead to neck problems for instance and you have to be a contortionist to get to the toilet roll holder.

We stayed for the 2012 Grand Prix weekend in 317 (studio, but with balcony, at the back of the building). I think most of the reviews are positive and I would tend to agree with most of them. I do feel like a few things need refining, given the price...

Good points - nice rooms, nice bedding. The towels are soft and the robes are good as well. Nice touch of the slippers which were above average and fluffy. T2 teas. Free internet via ethernet cable (no wireless). Free magazines (Russh, the monthly, and some other art magazines) in the room. Art books to read in the room. They gave us early check in, which was nice.

Ok points - Nice folder of hotel information (but needs to be updated!) - I didn't have room service but the prices looked decent. Exhaust fan in the bathroom made the bathroom a bit cold!

Not so good points/ Room for improvement - At one point I thought housekeeping lost my PJs (as it turned out they had folded it and left it in between 2 pillows (who does that?!)- my partner was sleeping on the pillows so I had didn't to find them) - front desk didn't follow up in the morning with me on whether they had found them or not.

The toiletries are 'designed in Australia' for the Art Series group, but they do smell a bit too much like the commercial stuff you get at the big hotel chains - I think I would have been disappointed if I had stayed at the more expensive Art Series hotels and didn't get nice toiletries (the bar of soap was ok). By means of example I've stayed at the Standard in LA, and they have super nice organic stuff, and the price and type of hotel is comparable.

The pool has a shower, and it's open to the elements but it's heated. Some people commented that the pool goes over the restaurant - it only goes over the footpath, and you can't really see clearly down or them up, so I wouldn't really stress that people could see you swimming. The shower by the pool didn't have any hot water coming out after running it for 2 min and it was pretty cold AM (13 degrees) in March to be standing there waiting! In the end I gave up. Perhaps they need to check this shower regularly to make sure it's working.

The bed was comfortable, but it was squeaked. I also thought it was probably too hot to use a down quilt at this time of year but there wasn't spare thinner blanket in the room.

It would have been nice if there was free wireless internet in the rooms, as not everyone brings their laptops these days.

I think the people upstairs from us were having a bbq (?!) as you could smell sausages or something (they were probably cooking up a storm - but the rooms do have an exhaust fan) - this meant we couldn't leave the balcony door open a little to get some fresh air.

The bathroom is not very bright - makes it hard to put make up on etc and I had to do that in front of the hallway mirror.

Overall I would probably stay at the Olsen again. I'm just picking on it because it holds itself out as 5 star hotel so naturally the expectations are higher. It's in a handy location close to South Yarra station and a full sized Woolworths is up the road. Albert Park is very close so you can walk to the Grand Prix. You can also walk into the CBD along the yarra for about 40 minutes if you want as well.

This may as well be the only hotel in Melbourne, because I won't be staying anywhere else! We were blown away by the facilities and standard of service. The room was spotless, modern, beautifully furnished and the bed was so comfy I wanted to squeeze it into my suitcase! It’s rare a hotel can make you feel like you’re on holiday when you’re there for business. I recommend this hotel without hesitation and look forward to returning soon.

The best aspect of this hotel is the remarkable service by all staff members. I have never experienced better service in any other hotel - truly world class level every time, without fail. The rooms and beds are very comfortable and the pool is just gorgeous! I have stayed here a few times already for work and will continue to come back! Absolutely wonderful hotel!
