My husband and I hadn't really planned our day out when we were in Melbourne this past Tuesday, so when we passed by the museum we decided to pop in and have a look around. Found the gold mine exhibit and the dragon especially interesting. I might be back when I'm next in Melbourne.
I wasn't expecting much from this museum but I left very impressed. It was bigger than I expected, with great information and a variety of exhibits to engage both children and adults. It's a quiet retreat from busy China Town, well air-conditioned, and I loved their selection of souvenirs too like cute ceramic turtles and chopstick rests (lots of interesting items before you even get into the place!) Well worth the entry fee.
This is very good presentation with pictures, text, and dioramas on the history of Chinese people in Australia. And it also includes information on other Asians too, Indonesians, Malays, and Vietnamese. In July when we visited there was a special exhibit on the Han Dynasty in China (Han Dynasty Life Everlasting).
The museum has updated some areas but others are in need of a patron willing to invest in a worthy project. Don't expect something flashy from this museum. You will certainly come away with a better understanding of the experience of Chinese immigrants in Australia. Put this together with a visit to the Immigration Museum for a comprehensive view.
An enjoyable and educational visit. The reconstruction of the gold diggings was great fun, reminded me of the Titanic experience. Would recommend a visit. The seniors card helps with entry cost
I love Chinatown and was very interesting to see this museum - especially the very long dragon/lion that goes up and up and up! It was quite a different feel from other places, and I was glad I went there. I would love to go during a festival!
Well kept and extensive group of artifacts and details of the contributions of Chinese immigrants to the Australian story. Loved the LOOONG dragon used in parades.
