My husband and I came across this museum while wandering around the streets of Melbourne. It is very well set up, well explained on the history of Chinese in Australia
and the basement is a hidden little gem. Go visit.
I took my 4 children here and we all loved it. We paid a $25.00 (family) entry. We started at the basement and worked our way up to the 3rd floor. They have a Han Dynasty exhibition currently, which took up the 2nd floor. Absolutely worth the visit.
The location is sensational as it sits in a lovely alley/court off the top (Exhibition Street) of ChinaTown Melbourne.
I stumbled upon this museum completely by chance and given that it is celebrating its 30th anniversary that was surprising. It consists of several floors most with a permanent collection and another one with a visiting one. At the moment it has one on the history of the Han dynasty which is not strictly related to the Chinese in Australia but to the general history of China. Most of it comes from a private collection and was interesting.
The really good and unusual section is the one that relates to the Chinese in Australia as well as specifically to Melbounre. I thoroughly recommend it as it is in the right place before or after a good meal of dim sum.
Fantastic museum offering rich history with plenty of cool items on display. The Han exhibition was super interesting with a jade warrior burial suit. The display of the gold diggers on the bottom floor was full of interactive stuff engaging both the young and the old. The Chinese millennium dragon is absolutely magnificent and amazing. Wish we could see it in action!
Even though two floors were closed for a new exhibit being installed, this was still a good museum with interesting information about the Chinese community in Australia. The longest ceremonial dragon in the world is here, wrapping around the building, and there is a lot of cultural and social history. I learned a lot, and the staff were friendly and happy to lock up our wet bags and coats while we visited. Definitely recommend.
A great place to see Victoria's Chinese history. There are three floors to wander through starting in the basement with a glimpse of the shipboard journey to Australia. Following the millennium dragon along its length from the basement along its 26 metre length is a novel way to get an idea of how big it is - great display and well worth a visit
