If you are arriving late or leaving early it is a great place as it is just 2 minutes far from the bus station ! Also there is always someone at the reception so great when nothing is booked and just arriving in the middle of the jetlag :-)
Windows are very thin and the street quite busy (nightclub + trafic) so it's kind of noisy.
Free internet, pasta party on thursdays.
Good value during the winter time but too expensive during summer time (I was there in september and back in octobre and the price different is too much)

Location is good, service is non Service is non existant. House cleaning ... What's that? Apparently they didn't allow in this years budget for vacuum cleaners but they 'sweep' your room. No elavators, no bar, no visitors allowed. Cheap, but I've paid the same elsewhere and had such a better experience. Never again..

not a bad hostel, bit weird they had 12 bed all male and all female dorms.
which was a first in Oz but owell. stayed a few nights, didnt really spend much time in the room but there was always someone in there snorring away lol but that is the funny side of travelling --- your belongs felt safe with a locker (your own padlock)

showers etc where fine, bedsheets get one set a stay!

kitchen was fine, located fairly near the city centre but not the easiest to find when your pissed :)

if i went back to melbourne i wouldnt stay here just because im sure there are better hostels!!

This place was truly horrible. I have travelled to Melbourne on six seperate occasions, staying at various backpackkers and hotels each time. This is by far the worst accomodation i have ever stayed at. I use the word "stayed" loosely. After arriving at 2 am we checked in to a horribly unkempt, barred-off lobby, they has "confused our booking, so they didn't have a room for the the duration of our stay. we opted to have a private room at $40 pp per night, as we thought that this would be a bit nicer and there'd be more privacy. we entered what we called the "army barracks" which was a fully concrete room with a bunk bed. there were also two army-green lockers crammed into this tiny room - this room was NOT AT ALL reflective of what they had on the website. I was NOT happy.
We decided (at 3am) to try some of the other local backpackers i knew of, this proved unsuccessful as the three other places we walked to were fully booked.
Defeated, we returned to King st backpackers at 4.30am and used their free half hour internet (perhaps the only positive attribute to the place) to find another place to stay for the next few nights.

The beds were ridiculously squeaky, you couldn't move, i was scared to lay on the linen as it had hair and stains on it and it made me itchy. AWFUL!
we slept fitfully for half an hour in total before leaving at 7am when the roadworkers (who sounded like they were in our room) started up.

Please do yourself a favour and stay elsewhere. The greenhouse backpackers is much nicer, cleaner, in a similar location and at the same price, or if you're travelling with others, pay the extra $10 each to get a decent hotel room. We stayed at Arrow in Carlton after this and it was AWESOME! self-contained apartments at a good price.

Rooms are small, ours faced the street so it was quite noisy! Bathrooms are a bit grubby, free internet (for those without laptops) is limited to a half hour per person on 2 fairly old computers that take forever to load. Access to rooms is by key, not swipe card. Didn't use the kitchen facilities so can't comment on that. On the plus side, most people seem to keep to the 11p.m. noise curfew, rates aren't too pricey and location is good. We were originally meant to stay 4 nights but ended up checking out after the first night and found much nicer accommodation for the same price in a betterr location.
