Attraction details
Owner description: Louisa's Walk is a piece of Strolling Theatre or Walking Play that takes you on a journey into the life of Louisa Ragan, an Irish convict, sent to Van Diemen's Land on a seven year sentence, in 1841, for stealing a loaf of bread. You walk with the actors as they tell Louisa's story. You will meet Louisa outside the famous Cascade Brewery building in South Hobart. You will walk through the beautiful Cascade Gardens along to the World Heritage listed Cascades Female Factory Historic Site where Louisa was imprisoned. Once you enter those locked gates, they are shut behind you and you experience life in this harsh prison. You may laugh and you may cry but you will remember Louisa's story!

“Best thing I have done in a long time”

What are u doing being a tourist in tassy if a little bit of it is not about it's convict history?

This little venture was worth every cent and more. It was realistic, informative and unique. Don't miss the chance to experience the life of a convict woman in the early 1800's

“Deepens your understanding”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

There were only two other people on the tour the day I went, and we were occasionally engaged in the story as fellow prisoners. It's hard to see how anyone could justify the cruel policies of the time.

I concur with the advice to bring drinking water on a warm day and wear comfortable walking shoes. Also, be aware that the tour ends after the last run of the double-decker bus.

Thank you for this review. We do recommend that visitors bring water on the warmer days just as you would on any outside activity in summer. We do have an interval around two thirds of the way through when there is opportunity to purchase drinks/ice creams at the Cascade's Female Factory site shop.
The double decker bus is a tourist bus and its last loop does return shortly before Louisa's Walk ends (sometimes our visitors have to leave early in order to catch it). A better option would be to catch one of the regular Metro buses back down into Hobart. We carry bus timetables with us and there is one at 4.09 p.m or, a little later at 4.50p.m. It is only a short ride back down into the city.

“Great presentation”

This was a great presentation of the hardships that women went through in the female factory. They gave an excellant dramatic tour. We would recommend it to anyone.

Brilliant acting and really takes you back into the 1900s with props and all. Skip Port Arthur and give this a try!

“The Female Factory - Very moving and so interesting”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

This walk is a must for those who want to learn a little more about the origins of Hobart and it's history. Great acting by our guides who kept our small group involved and riveted for the couple of hours we were with them.
