Owner description: Louisa's Walk is a piece of Strolling Theatre or Walking Play that takes you on a journey into the life of Louisa Ragan, an Irish convict, sent to Van Diemen's Land on a seven year sentence, in 1841, for stealing a loaf of bread. You walk with the actors as they tell Louisa's story. You will meet Louisa outside the famous Cascade Brewery building in South Hobart. You will walk through the beautiful Cascade Gardens along to the World Heritage listed Cascades Female Factory Historic Site where Louisa was imprisoned. Once you enter those locked gates, they are shut behind you and you experience life in this harsh prison. You may laugh and you may cry but you will remember Louisa's story!

“Genuine and imaginative experience”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

Very interesting, experience obviously a genuine labour of love by the 2 presenters, fascinating afterwards to hear the research behind it.I attended with an elderly relative and friend who found the walk challenging. Prior to visit I imagined the Women's prison as adjacent to the Cascade Brewery but in fact it's more than a stroll away. I ended up leaving my mother & friend at the bottom of the walk & returning to collect them by car at the end. We all enjoyed it but be advised that it is challenging for the elderly.

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. The walk down from the Cascade Brewery to the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is around three quarters of a kilometre and is a gentle downhill walk all the way. Thus it is uphill on the way back! Whenever we see that an audience member has some mobility issues we advise that they may prefer to wait down at the Female Factory (where there are chairs and hot/cool drinks available). They can then be picked up and brought back up to the Brewery either by us or by a friend. However, this is not ideal in that they feel they have missed out on the homeward walk. We would strongly recommend that people who have walking difficulties, who believe that the walk there and back may be too much for them, consider experiencing our sister production "Her Story". This takes place around Yard One of the Female Factory itself and involves very little walking. Bookings are not necessary, just arrive at the Female Factory by 10.50 a.m.

“A heartfelt display of history.”
Reviewed 23 March 2012

Louisa's walk is informative and we would recommend it as an excellent way to discover a piece of Tasmanian history from a woman's perspective. The actors made you feel part of the presentation without being to over the top. Suggest people take water Long as there is no where to get a drink until quite late in the piece and the day we went was very warm and some people had no drinks.

“Well worth doing”
Reviewed 22 March 2012

We really enjoyed this tour, as it gave an excellent account of the history of the convicts in an interesting and emotional way. It wasn't at all boring, and in fact brought history alive. Walking around the beautiful area was a bonus. It went for over an hour, so it was well worth the money. The acting was really good as well, and the couple who performed were so lovely and friendly. I would highly recommend it to anyone. We especially liked the way Louisa remembered all our names....nice personal touch!

“History come to life!”
Reviewed 7 March 2012

Louisa's Walk was a wonderful experience for my sisters and our husbands on our recent stay in Hobart. I had read reviews on Tripadvisor and thought that this was something that would interest each of us. Our great great grandfather had been a warden at the Cascades Insane Asylum (Female Factory) and I thought that this would be a unique way for my family to see the actual site. I booked online and instructions were very clear. Our tour was a Sunday afternoon. That morning it was raining quite heavily so a quick call to confirm the tour would be on and I was reassured by Judith (the owner) that the weather would clear (and she was right) and anyway umbrellas would be available just in case. Our meeting point was clear and who could mistake the girl from another time standing waiting for her audience! From that moment we were transported back in time and the next 2 hours went very quickly. What a terrible story that has to be told. All 5 of us in our group could not praise this tour highly enough. We were very lucky to be entranced by Judith and Chris, the owners of the business. Very fine actors and Judith has a lovely singing voice too! (and the sun came out for the length of our tour when the clouds rolled in again, timed to perfection!) At a cost of $30 per adult this is truly worth every cent. A must do in Hobart!

“Awesome story”

Definitely go for this tour. Starts at the brewery. Story is told in a beautiful way which puts us in the picture, which makes it all real.
