A bit of a hidden history gem! We didn't see this anywhere but on Tripadvisor. $10 entry gave nearly 2 hours of fascinating tour and access to historical documents etc. We had already visited Port Arthur so this was another aspect of the convict story up to the more recent use as a high court. Highly recommended.

I first heard about Penitentiary Chapel Tour from Caravan & Motorhome on Tour DVD, so whilst visiting Hobart it was on our list of things to do. My husband and I where introduced to John our guide who was full of enthusiasm and knowledge of the gaol's history. We fell this tour is a must for anyone who has a convict heritage or an interest in Australian History. The curator Brain also spent time with us and his passion and dedication is obvious. The tour is excellent value for money.

We heard about this place from the shot tower. It is right in the city. There are great stories that the volunteer tour guides tell you and you get the chance to be locked in goal as well as be the judge.

I actually live in hobart and have driven past the penitentiary chapel dozens of times. After finally making the effort to go, I was very happily surprised. It was very informative, and really gave a good feel as to what it would be like to be a prisoner there. It was also pretty eerie in parts, which makes me want to do the ghost tour as well. Just need to build up the courage!

The guide was great, the price was very good. It was really very good overall.

An informative guide through this sad part of Australia's history - although not so much 'distant' history, as this Goal was used until the 1960's!! Fascinating and challenging stories of how inmates were housed, treated and sometimes executed . Glad someone had the foresight not to demolish the whole site when the prison and courts were transferred - an important part of our National story that needs to be remembered.
