We were told that continental breakfast was included in the tariff. In reality it was a packet of cheap white sliced bread, a few Weatbix in a large box, 3 packets of cornflakes and 4 sachets of muesli. That's pretty much it. It's presented on a bench in a tiny kitchen, complete with an ironing board and 2 stored chairs. I asked if I could possibly have some fruit or yogurt, but was told this was not possible. The dishes were to be washed by the guests, so you can imagine how clean they were.We stayed for 6 nights and the bread was finally restocked on our last morning. (The previous day all that was left were 2 crusts). EVERY night I had to go down to ask that the milk be restocked. WiFi was not available as there "was a problem with the modem". I love Battery Point, but avoid the Shipwright Arms!

Room Tip: Room 7 had a view, but the fan from the kitchen outside the window was on every day till about 10pm...

This was always a consistently good eatery but I am sad to say that on a recent visit things have changed and not for the better. The new owners have not made a positive impact in fact quite the reverse. Serves were small and the once superlative seafood chowder that was a signature dish was a poor relation of what had been before. There were 4 of us and we were all of the same opinion. The serving plates were huge and showy but the food did not match in either quality of quantity. There was a need to bulk it up with 'sides'. We left feeling hungry. The new owners need to be more thoughtful about the menu and the needs of their clientele many of whom are regulars. We will be looking elsewhere in future and are sorry to take this one off our favourites list.

We stayed at this great pub for our weekend in Hobart. The pub is in Battery Point, just a short walk up Kelly Steps from Salamanca Place so in a perfect position. Our room (no.6) had a great view of the Derwent and was quiet with a comfy bed. Amazingly friendly atmosphere both on check in and for the whole weekend. We ate in the restaurant on the Friday night and the food was delicious. I had the Seafood Selection which was well priced for the amount of seafood included. I wasn't able to finish it! Fresh large scallops, salt and pepper calamari, fresh king prawns, amazingly fresh oysters naturale and smoked salmon with triple cooked chips. It was a feast And the service was very attentive, both in relation to advice on the specials and wines.
On Sunday we sampled some of the bar menu- delicious seafood chowder with heaps of scallops, mussels, fish & a great creamy broth, and the bowl of beer battered chips.

Room Tip: Rooms 5,6 & 7 have views of the Derwent

I have been a frequent diner at Shipwrights Arms over the past 8 yearst. Over 90 visits. It has gone off. New owners have moved in about 5 weeks ago and i guess they are feeling their way, but that does not mean that the customer should suffer. Service terrible...no wine glasses on the table and after waiting at least 10 minutes we had to go in search of a staff member to get a wine list. The restaurant was NOT busy.We ordered 3 coffees after the meal...only 2 delivered. Staff were very laid back and you got the feeling that we were not essential to their days activities. However the food was served promptly, presented well and tasty. But this is pub food only. This hotel use to pride itself on offering restaurant style food . In the past this was the case and it carried a well deserved reputation. But that is not the case in October 2015. Last visit barely 2 stars. If it does not improve on my next visit i will not be going back. Disappointed.

Google bars around Battery Point and this one popped up. Small walk and we arrived. Couple cold drinks then a stunning Seafood Chowder full of goodies. Great service, friendly staff set among an old neighbourhood . Waiter raved about sticky date pudding. Might be back Saturday
