We wanted to see the Organ Pipes, which are located below Mt Wellington, so opted for a hike/bush walk taking in both Mt Wellington and the Pipes. It should take no more than 3 hours and is the easier option than starting from "The Springs".
Instead you park the car at "The Chalet". The first bit is on the road heading towards the summit. After about a 20-30 min walk you will see a sign "Panorama Track" on your left. Follow this path and you will get to the summit. From the summit head south and you will get to the start of the Zig Zag track, it's all downhill and steep at places but the views and the landscape are just fantastic. You will eventually get to the junction where the Organ Pipes track starts to your left. Follow this track until you get back to "The Chalet" car park. Seeing the Organ Pipes below Mt Wellington close up was amazing, and so was the view from the summit over Hobart.

You can find a PDF of Mt Wellington Walking tracks on the Wellington Park website.

You will need good walking shoes/boots for this bush walk. When we went the Organ Pipes Track was quite muddy in places.

On the way down do stop at the Lost Freight Coffee shop @ The Springs car park. It's a beautiful spot to refuel, and their Hot Chocolates are amazing.

We drove up to the Top of mount Wellington with our 2 kids (16 and 12). We were lucky it was a sunny day. The view is incredible. I have never taken so many photos in one place. Just amazing. I recommend it to everyone visiting Hobart. Only a 25 min drive from the CBD. Just done forget to bring warm clothes, you will need them once you reach the top of the mountain.

The top of mt Wellington has such incredible views of Hobart! You can see the entire city and greater Hobart! Thoroughly enjoyed it :) also, there’s a toilet and an indoor lookout for convenience and comfort :) drive up is windy so be prepared!

What an awesome view. You won't be disappointed. Take the slow windy drive up the top to enjoy a breezy view of Hobart. The walkways are easy, the parking plenty and the view outstanding - just remember it is 10 degrees colder up there!

The Salamanca tourist office booked me on a tour with a small operator “See Tasmania”. $55AUD return.
Brenton picked up a small group of tourists (small white van) from the bus bay next to the same tourist office. The RED bus tour is 10m away.
The drive to the mountain top is about 30 min trip and the last section is very narrow and winding. Good to have a local driver as the you have to compete with large buses.
There is parking at various locations up the mountain for different activities.
The local plants and trees change as you move further up the mountain to become sparse at the top.
There are several parking spaces at the top with a main viewing platform and a set of toilets. There are walking platforms and open walking tracks. I managed to walk around the three walking platforms and viewing decks and make it half way to the organ pipes in 60 mins before the bus was scheduled to leave.
The weather for my visit was cold but clear with some high cloud. Be prepared for strong winds and a wind chill so dress warm and take your sunglasses.
My tour also took us to the Cascade Brewery on the way back to the city but this was nothing much unless you want a pub and gardens.
My Wellington is highly recommended but is weather permitting. The roads are closed when it snores or are icy.
