“Breathtaking beauty”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2012

The lodge is simple, yet classy in its decor which fits in beautifully to its surroundings. The view of the ocean from every perspective is magnificent. The hospitality in the dining room is perfection.

This is a truly amazing place to holiday! Not only are the views incredible, but the rooms are luxurious and modern, the staff warm and knowledgeable and the food delicious. My husband and I had only a short visit, but found that we instantly relaxed due to the atmosphere. Nearby are wild seals and Remarkable Rocks - which really are remarkable. I can't wait to go back, next time I will make sure it is for longer!

This is a MUST stay and well worth the cost. The staff is absolutely lovely (and very attentive). There is no question that the location is just ideal. It is a 5* experience and so worth the indulgence. I recommend the Kangas & Kanapes experience and the Wonders of KI tour for the half day. My travelling companions thoroughly enjoyed the Spa. The food, wine/beverages were excellent. I wish I had stayed for 3 days rather than 2 ~ you really cannot go wrong with a visit to Souther Ocean Lodge.

I've been meaning to write this review for ages! I organised a long weekend here in March 2011 for a birthday group, taking up every available room in the lodge. The attention to detail was incredible - the adventure starts from pickup at the airport in luxurious 4 W/D's, its a bit of a bumpy trip but it just adds to the surprise awaiting as you step out and into the main lounge area with its comfortable lounges, and central fireplace suspended from the ceiling, take any lounge at the ceiling to floor windows, which enjoy incredible views over the cliffs to the wild ocean below. Arrival drinks or one of their refreshing ice teas and canapes to start and then you are taken to your room...and even the most basic room is not basic at all. All rooms face the cliff and the view, nothing else is between you and nature other than a pane of glass, the views are just extraordinary. Little "aussie" touches such as a platter of freshly made mini lamingtons and fresh fruit, to a well stocked fridge with wine, juices, water and munchy items such as cheese, nuts, bikkies...all included in your room tariff. The meals are all amazing and the wines are well matched - the spa is fantastic and a full body massage or a facial are both highly recommended. Every room has an outdoor room facing nature, you dont see your neighbours its very private, some have their own hot tubs. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms have beautiful lotions and creams infused with lemon myrtle, wild lavender and other native plants and herbs. Staff are incredibly helpful and lovely and the management team are superb. They really know what they are doing at this property. There are a couple of tours that are included one of which is the clifftop walk...dont be afraid there are boardwalks subtly surrounding the whole lodge which blend beatifully into the landscape and tables perched (safely) on the clifftops that you can sit and contemplate or take a bottle of wine and celebrate. For the more active minded there are other activities that can be arranged for you such as quad bikes tours of varying levels and bicycles are also available. There is a long bar in the Great room (lounge) where you can pour your own drink or staff will be happy to do that for you or make you a cocktail, nothing is too much trouble and they have a great measurement system (freepour ha!) Yes its expensive but achievable, and when you get there you realise that it is actually worth every dollar and wonderful for a super special celebration or an exclusive weekend away to just relax, absorb nature, and concentrate on yourselves. Highly reccomended!

Room Tip: Any room is perfect

I am a bit late in posting this review, as I stayed there in October 2011, but would like to give my two cents. I have had the wonderful opportunity to stay in some truly fine places around the world, and can say without reservations this is the finest place I have ever stayed. To start with, the staff is outstanding. No stuffy formality, but true Aussie hospitality with a keen eye towards making everything about your stay enjoyable. The view from the Great Room will truly take your breath away, and the warmth and light make this a place where you can literally stay for hours and have no regrets. The rooms are private, very well equipped, and roomy, with a lovely decor, beautiful touches and plenty of light. As amazing as it is to look at the windows over the ocean, and see the waves crashing, it is just as amazing to look the opposite way and see the native bush with nary a building in sight. The food is world class, and the way the chef sources from local producers makes each meal a wonder. If you have not tasted chicken, fish, beef or cheese from Kangaroo Island, it will be one of your highlights. Truly amazing, with absolutely phenomenal preparation. In the evenings, we would enjoy sitting in the Great Room and sampling some amazing South Australian wines (included during a stay), and hearing the staff give the back story on the particular vintner and what to expect for the upcoming dinner. Further, the hikes and runs one can enjoy during a stay at the lodge are stunning; one of the most beautiful spots anywhere. The tour from the lodge, with Exceptional Kangaroo Island tour company, is an experience worth the trip, and this is the best place to see the flora and fauna of Australia. (Our group saw kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, echidnas, seals, and a wombat, to say nothing of the immense birdlife.) This place often is compared with Saffire Lodge in Coles Bay, Tasmania, and I had the privilege of staying there on the same trip. While they are both unique and show a different landscape, coupling these together is a great idea and they are both fantastic. But in my estimation, nothing can beat Southern Ocean Lodge, and I can not recommend this place more highly. I would also recommend this place for a terrific honeymoon or special celebration trip, like a milestone anniversary.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms here, but if you can splurge a bit the Remarkable Suite provides a truly amaz...
