Sunny's Adelaide Backpackers Hostel

I have travelled around the world and stayed in hundreds of hostels. I can honestly say this has to be the worst. It was dirty and uncomfortable. The inside of the building looked like it was falling apart. The rooms were damp and the smell disgusting. The shower room was disgusting and did not have a cubicle to change in. As for the free internet.......good luck if you can get on to the ‘one’ computer available. If this wasn’t bad enough the hostel was full of very strange people, we would often walk in on people talking to themselves. I got the impression the place was more of a refuge centre for the homeless/insane than a hostel.

I booked for a week but left after one night of trying to sleep next to the endlessly banging door leading outside. My tiny room absolutely stank of damp, sweat and dirty feet and socks. The carpet was damp and dirty. The thin foam mattresses were ancient, with horribly stained and ripped cotton covers, and the pillows so dirty and smelly I could not bear to put my head on one. Imagine turning your mattress over as I did to find a huge menstrual stain made by some-one's tampon leaking at some time in the past! YECHHHHHHHHHHH! I have never stayed in such a depressing place in years of travelling. It was completely disgusting, unacceptable and unnecessary - hostel accommodation can be much better than this. On the upside, the staff were friendly, but there was no chance anything could be improved so I paid and left. It is a pity - if money were spent on refurbishment it could be really neat.

I really did not like this place. It was really dirty and uncomfortable, there was only one shower working in the girls bathroom and it was filthy. The rooms were dirty and all the furniture is old and uncomfortable....the whole place was drab and either moldy, unfinished or falling apart. The kitchen was tiny and dirty. On the up side it is really close to the bus station and the town and I only had to stay one night so it was bearable. The staff were friendly enough.

Actually, I am staying in this hostel right now. 2 of my room-mates are suffering from "suspected" bed bugs' bites. We have to put all our stuffs under the sun and move to another room. Well, maybe many hostels have this problem.
Staffs are nice, pancakes every morning, very close to Free bus stop, Central bus station and Chinatown. However, the kitchen is small, some stoves do not work, lack of pan/pot/knife, etc. Showers do not have hot water all day. Good luck to all.

John who runs this hostel is a nice chap, he replied my email quickly to say they had space. I turned up after 9pm and although Reception is shut by this time, because they knew Id be coming late, John made sure a member of staff was on hand to check me in. Nice people staying here who dont make heaps of noise banging about when they get in at 2am. Girls only dorm with girls only bathroom with strict instructions to guys to leave alone unless they fancy instant eviction. TV room and lounge with good selection of DVDs and books - even a Lonely Planet Australia! Free pancakes for breafast and tea and coffee all day. Nice courtyard to have a smoke with your new mates. They even refunded me $10 for checking out a night early without me having to ask for anything. Only problems I had were no air conditioning in room which during 46 degree heat doesnt make a good nights sleep easy and its a few blocks away from Rundle Mall where the 'action' of Adelaide is but this can actually add to your experience here as you have to make your own entertainment haha!
