Sandy our guide was excellent, the wineries that we visited were great. Lunch was a BBQ cooked by Sandy, she cooks a mean BBQ

“Best thing we did in Australia!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2011

My husband and I did the Rock 2 Water tour, 5 days/4 nights from Alice Springs to Adelaide. I was a little nervous starting out because I didn't know what to expect of the group and what the camping situation would be like. Our group was 16 women and 4 men (though I don't think that's typical!). There was a family of a mom and two kids around age 13, a French woman in her 60's, one other young couple, and the rest early 20's from all over Europe, and two girls from Korea. So it was quite a mix, but everyone in our group was friendly and spoke excellent English. I was worried there might be too much of a party atmosphere, but everyone was so tired at the end of the day that nobody stayed up late drinking or anything like that.

The campsites all had nice restrooms and shower facilities. Sleeping in swags was awesome! I was completely warm and comfortable all night, but make sure you do the optional sleeping bag hire for $15 or bring your own sleeping bag. You cannot camp without one. A couple people tried and ended up sleeping on the bus in super cramped seats. Also, I slept in pajama pants, t-shirt, thermal shirt, polar fleece jacket, fuzzy socks, beanie hat, and gloves. Make sure you bring layers, it's really cold at night.

A note about fitness: You do need at least a moderate level of fitness to do these hikes. If you have trouble with climbing this is going to be difficult for you. A few people stayed behind on a couple hikes and they just had to sit in the hot bus for 4 hours. I'm not in amazing shape, but I had been working out regularly before this trip.

The highlights of the trip were Uluru (but climb was closed due to wind), King's Canyon, and the kangaroo orphanage in Coober Pedy. There is a lot of driving on this trip, so make sure you have a book or music or something to do. I also recommend putting whatever you need for the day (or the whole trip if you can) into a backpack or small duffel so you can slide it under your seat. Otherwise, you'll be in and out of the trailer all the time, which slows the group down. Other lifesavers: warm hat for night time, gloves!, reusable water bottle, snacks. Our group did run out of food at a couple meals because our guide had never bought food for such a big group before. You will be fed, but you might not get enough, so bringing your own snacks is essential.

“Awesome!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2011

So much better than we could have imagined. We did the Rock2Water and Great Ocean Road tours. We did Uluru, Kings Canyon etc first, the walks were just the right length, not too short or long. We had a great group that got along really well and a fantastic tour guide called Robert who knew his stuff and enjoyed what he did. He was a great cook and we were always stuffed. We slept in swags most nights so we were in the open air but these were more comfy than most hostel beds! The scenery was amazing, one night we stayed in the middle of nowhere but it was just a great experience. We sat around a camp fire in the evenings singing along with one of the guys that bought a guitar. There was a day tour around some wineries in between the two main tours which was good. The Grampians were stunning and although the weather was a bit rubbish on the Great Ocean Road we still had a good time and most of our group did both parts of the tour. Sean was our second tour guide who was really cool as well and found us some wild kangaroo's to watch. We wouldn't have seen half as much without this tour and it was the perfect fit for us, a young backpacking couple, but it would be for anyone looking for a good time and amazing experiences.
