Pros:

Having booked a 2-bedroom apartment, we were fortunate enough to be upgraded to the 3-bedroom executive apartment on arrival. The apartment was spacious, tastefully decorated, and finished to a very high standard. It contained a large lounge, dining and kitchen area, large balcony with outdoor dining table, laundry room, master bedroom with en suite and walk-in wardrobe, second double bedroom with walk-in wardrobe, third bedroom with two single beds, and separate shower room and toilet. See photos.

The kitchen was very well equipped, with a large selection of crockery, glassware, cooking utensils, blender, sandwich grill, etc.

The beds were very comfortable.

The apartment’s fans were so good (and quiet) we found we didn’t use the air con for most of our stay.

A great location, less than a minute’s walk to the beach and around 5 minutes walk to Macrossan Street (Port’s main street).

Cons

On our second morning, we were woken at 5.30am by our upstairs neighbours – initially a child/children running along the wooden/tiled corridors and later one or more heavy-footed adults, and sporadic moving of items across the floor. As this continued for several hours, we spoke with the receptionist around 8.30am. This, and subsequent conversations throughout the day (as the noise continued), resulted in no action being taken by management. Latterly, it was suggested we speak with our neighbours directly; such lack of ownership is not what I expect from any hotel or apartment complex - particularly from a 5-star property. The following morning we were woken at 5:15am with the same. Upon checkout (noting a different receptionist was then on shift) – having been asked how our stay was – we reiterated that the apartment was lovely however the continuous noise, and lack of action by management, was unacceptable. The receptionist then indicated we should have told them and they could have done something – we advised we had several times the day prior, and no action was taken. No apology was forthcoming. The situation could easily have been mitigated by ensuring families with young children are placed on ground floor apartments, or where a complaint has been made this being dealt with by management politely discussing with the offending party.

A few other cons noted, however minor when compared with the above, were:

Whilst the apartment was on the whole immaculate, the cleanliness in the en suite bathroom could have been better. The flooring in the corner in which the bath was positioned diagonally was in need of cleaning – containing dust, hairs, etc. See photo.

The drain for the shower in the en suite was inadequate. Whilst showering, water begins to build up and without the main drain to run into would soon flood the bathroom.

In summary, whilst we found the apartment itself beautiful and the location great, the continuous noise and apathetic approach by management means that unfortunately we wouldn’t recommend the apartments for a stay.

Tip) If you’re planning on visiting the GBR, it’s worth checking out Quicksilver Cruises outer barrier reef day trip. We found it a very well organised, activity packed, trip.

We had a ground floor 2 bedroom apt on the corner of the "Shalimar" building, next to a small pool and close to the street. It was all very convenient, you can walk to town or the beach very quickly with easy access to the underground car park - the apt was well-maintained with a full kitchen - and the ladies in the office (the managers, maybe) were friendly and helpful. The smallish pool next to our apt was nice to sit around - you could find the sun, but it's in the shade most of the day - it could do with some heating at certain times of the year.
This resort does attract a lot of families, there were babies crying through the night and the larger pool usually had a few noisy kids in it...our porch was still pleasant though and secluded. If you prefer a quieter place and don't have kids, try Shantara, the Peninsula or The Meridien - all great resorts for adults only. We didn't find it a major problem though....
It's a walk-up building, so if you have an injury, prams or small children, you might want to request a ground floor unit.

Room Tip: Ground or first floor - there are no lifts in the Shalimar building - not sure about Mandalay

The property is well situated on a quiet street close to the beach and the centre of town. The apartment was very well equipped and clean. We loved our first floor balcony surrounded by palm fronds. The room was quiet and private despite the property being very busy. We alos enjoyed the tennis court and the easy access to the beach.

However, we were in the former Shalimar part of the property and some of the furniture looked a bit shabby and the fridge and oven while still fully functional did look a bit old. the laundry equipment on the other hand was very new.

There was no concierge so if you have a second floor apartment it could be difficult to move your luggage in.

Overall though it was clean and comfortable but not as luxurious as I had hoped for.

Spacious and stylish, fully equipped apartment with all mod cons. Friendly and helpful reception staff. Easy walk to shops and beach. A very comfortable and relaxing stay. Downside: rooms overlooking entry driveway means you are awakened by late night returns and early departures -- not what you want on relaxing holiday. Also a nasty stain on the carpet in the main bedroom -- out of keeping with the overall presentation of the apartment. And the pool was smaller than appeared in website photos (and much colder than the water temperature at the beach).
