“Perfect private forest retreat”
Reviewed 13 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

I loved it here. It was as beautiful and calming as the pictures made it look. We stayed in Guest House 1 and had complete privacy in the middle of the trees with an ocean view and open air spa bath. The guest house was actually built by the owner Rob and feels like you are in one of those awesome Grand Design projects! Its a gorgeous wooden chalet with bedroom on the mezzanine.

Definitely recommend hiring a car if you are visiting this area as there is so much to see and do in the local area, but nice not to be in Port Douglas itself. Uli and Rob also have a fantastic list of activities written with local insight, including some of the best swimming holes in Far North Queensland. There is also a lot of great local produce to buy to cook up great feasts at home in your guest house kitchen instead of paying overinflated Port Douglas restaurant prices. We had mud crabs, croc and some great meat from the butcher in Mossman.

Definitely recommend for a private retreat for a couple. Was a magical stay.

Liked best: Being in the trees

“The perfect place to stay in Port Douglas”
Reviewed 25 November 2012 for a stay in November 2012

My wife and I stayed here for about a week and a half around the solar eclipse in Nov 2012. We stayed in Cabin 1, which is isolated from the main house and therefore feels quite private (unless you happen to be naked in the spa as someone is going down the driveway during the day!).

There is a kitchen for making food, including some cooking stuff and appliances, so you can cook some nights if you don't want to go out every night on a long stay. There's no oven per se, but the microwave does something convection oven-y that works OK.

An outdoor porch has a spa that overlooks the forest and a little table for eating. The bathroom has a giant shower great for multiple people; it's also often home to little geckos. There is a pool up at the main house that you can use.

As everyone else reviewing has said, the location is perfect for Port Douglas---it's close enough that you can easily get into town when you want to (about 10 min to the town center, closer to a supermarket) but far enough away that you feel secluded in the rainforest. Most of the Port Douglas resorts are packed together and you certainly don't feel like you are in nature or secluded. You'll need a car, but in my opinion you'd be crazy to visit far north Queensland without a car anyway---there's too much stuff to see otherwise.

Other notes: while the cabin has wireless internet access, it's from the main house which is not close. I found I needed line of sight to get it, which meant only from upstairs in bed or sometimes from one part of the kitchen. There is a washer available but no dryer (Uli will let you use hers, I think); you're meant to use the line, which is fine except at the start of rainy season! Our clothes occasionally got wetter rather than drier as showers came. From April to October you'd be fine. There's a french press for coffee, but almost all Australian coffee is ground too fine for a french press---I'm not sure they know that they are all basically drinking Turkish coffee. Finally, it's the tropics and there are *lots* of little ants around all the time, you can't leave food out for more than a few seconds.
