Went to Mass at the cathedral on Sunday morning. The building looks plain from the outside but it holds a great surprise inside. The coloured glass windows depict the story of creation ....windows are separate but the painted, glass scenes cover the two wall areas from front to back of the cathedral. Most impressive. This is a war memorial church and the other windows at the front door depict the battle of the Coral Sea. It includes a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins. After the service, an audio presentation began, explaining the windows. We then went to have a cuppa and meet some of the friendly locals in the meeting room behind the church. Be sure to have a look inside this cathedral when in Cairns.

Attended the early morning Sunday mass of St Monica Cathedral situated at 183 Abbott St Cairns first mass in the morning at 6:30am with Church Celebrant Bishop James Foley straight after retreat recovery, he said.
While being impressed with the interior of St Monica Cathedral (took all the possible angle of the Cathedral inside and out) for me is finely proportioned. It has a quiet dignity made imposing by the strong vertical brick piers along both sides of the nave. It has a pervasive feeling of solidity, serenity and pray-fullness.
The potential of the cathedral called for grand themes in any stained glass window. Contemplating the " Peace Window" (1995) and looking at the nave , the theme of Creation in Genesis Ch.1 & 2 presented itself. This Creation theme would provide the whole space with sense of unity. Each window represent its meaning from Window 1 to Window 24. Not like Window 19 feeling tranquil, restful evening sense creation. First visit Cairns, differently must explore the place next time.

My partner suggested that we visit this cathedral. Such an ordinary building on the outside but inside is a totally different matter. The stain glass windows are stunning. So much detail. There is a pamphlet to explain all the windows in detail. You don't need to be religious to enter the cathedral.
This is a must see in Cairns. Absolutely stunning
