We booked a unit in early February for a 7 night stay in mid-August through AirBnb (that's the subject of a separate review) asking for a ground floor unit but we were allocated a unit on the first floor. Makes you wonder how early you have to book to get a ground floor unit. We booked knowing there was no dishwasher but there was a washer and dryer in the unit. What you see in the advertising photos and what you get in reality are quite different.

We arrived just after reception hours had closed but had no trouble getting our room key from the safe. Thanks to a couple of fine gentlemen we managed to get our luggage up two flights of stairs to our room and that's when the disappointment started. The establishment is old, 40 to 50 years old and it shows in the units. Ours had a kitchen refurbishment but in doing that there was suddenly two lights in the kitchen and none in the living area. The units are smaller than they look in the photos and the laundry not only has a washer and dryer but they managed to squeezed in a fridge as well. The age of our unit was sadly shown in the bathroom where it stepped out of the 80's with it's shower, wash basin and toilet with a single plunger. The balcony in reality has room for a chair and one person. With two air conditioning units there is no room to move. Hardly a balcony.

As can happen on any holiday some things stop working. In our case we found that the dryer was broken and didn't dry, a power point would not switch on and that our 80's toilet would, at times, stick open and not fill. We reported these to reception and that's where the mattered ended. At no time did we get an update on how the repairs were going and as it turned out nothing was done because all the reported faults were still broken on the day we left.

This place is in a good location within easy walking distance to the Esplanade and the CBD but I'm sorry to say that's the only positive in a world of negatives.

With signs up everywhere threatening fines for non-compliance, this was for us not a place of welcome and somewhere we would not want to stay at again.

Room tip: Rooms near the front are very noisy.

The apartments are older, satisfactory never the less. There was crockery, cutlery, glasses, frypan and various other kitchen standards. Enough tea, coffee and milk to hold you until you get to the supermarket. The area close to the pool is a bit small, the b.b.q area is spacious with plenty of shade.I emailed a couple times before our trip, the repose was very quick, which was nice. One thing that I couldn't find when looking at the property's web site was whether or not there was secure parking, we were considering hiring a car, there is parking behind a locked gate. Well worth hiring a car, aslo book it before you travel. Something that didn't cross my mind, I wish it had, was whether or not there was an elevator. We were on the second floor. I found the stairs very challenging, because of my physical condition, also when bringing back a few groceries. We were close enough to walk to the waterfront, we ate dinner there twice during our 5 day stay.

Cascade Garden’s website (and billboard out the front) promoted nice bright rooms with white kitchens. So we booked 11 nights. We were so disappointed to find our room was dingy with a brown kitchen badly in need of fresh paint and smelling mouldy. On further inspection we found the room was not cleaned to a good standard and the kitchen cupboards contained dirty dishes and utensils. The ceiling fans and washing machine were filthy. We asked for further cleaning which was done. Cairns was fully booked over this period or we would not have stayed there.

We were looking for somewhere quiet, not too expensive yet walking distance to the city. Cascade Gardens was great for us. Sam checked us in, was very friendly and gave us our keys even though the room was not yet ready (it was only about 11am). So we walked to the aquarium nearby and then onto Rustys markets.
Our room was a nice size, ground floor with its own private yard backing onto Millie Street. We didn’t use the pool (it was a small pool btw). The Chinese restaurant 5 minutes walk away from town on Lake Street is really nice. The room did have some dirt marks and the fan over the bed was in desperate need of a scrub but we slept well. That is the most important thing. I am very happy with our choice to stay here and would be happy to return.

Room tip: Ground floor for your own yard
