My family and I visited Zoom and found it quite depressing. The day we went it was raining pretty heavily and we needed an umbrella as we were walking around the 'zoo' due to the amount of water coming through the roof. We assumed this was part of the 'ambiance', but when we asked a staff member about it, we were told that it was due to the deteriorating roof that needed to be repaired.
This didn't really bother us too much, but it was surprising how much water was coming through which highlighted how bad the structure of the roof was.
The main concern we all had was the treatment of the animals, but most of all was the poor koala that they threw about for photos. My husband and I both paid for a photo (around $20) and as we were lining up waiting to hold him, we started to really regret our decision. The koala was put on people for literally a minute (if that) for a very quick photo to be taken, and promptly snatched off you and the next person was called (it was literally "next person", "put your hands together" (hold koala and smile - koala grabbed off you) "next person"). It was by no means a calm and gentle treatment of the koala and the poor thing had definitely seen better days. The fluff on his ears was ratty and thin, there was hardly no fur on him and you could see the wrinkles in his skin. I thought it was possibly due to age and asked a staff member, but was told that the koala was still reasonably quite young. Every other koala I've seen in person has been very fluffy all over, and the carers have always been extremely gentle with them.
This treatment wasn't nice to see.
Besides the treatment of animals, it was also quite expensive as nothing is included in the entry price. Before we arrived, both my brother and I were both looking forward to doing the various activities, but decided not to bother paying extra.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to visit and share your feedback about the Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome. Sorry to hear the weather affected your trip. We can assure you due the the nature of the structure it is necessary to have air vents in the roof, sometimes if it rains heavily the water does come through.

We appreciate your concern for the welfare of our animals and especially the Koala. Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome adheres to, and exceeds, regulations implemented by our governing body. Experts are very impressed with our standards, and are satisfied that we meet the needs of our animals and that they live happy and content lives. In regards to the Koala's, Cuddling a koala is on the ‘bucket list’ for many visitors to wildlife parks in Australia. To ensure no stress is caused to the koalas, Biosecurity Queensland has a code of practice in place whereby a koala cannot be handled for more than 30 minutes a day, we strictly adhere to this process and rotate our Koala's so they are not under any stress.

Your feedback has been taken on board as we do not want the experience to seem stressful to the guests or the Koala. This has been elevated to senior management and please rest assured the entire koala experience is being reviewed.

Thank you again for your feedback

The purpose of my trip there was to, simply, hold a koala. I paid like $27, waited 40 minutes....and got my picture taken holding a koala. I didn’t go into the park at all. Staff was friendly and informative.

Thank s t

This place is really small. For the price you pay, you can visit again up to 4 days afterward but after the first visit, it's not really worth it, you can walk around in 1/2 an hour and see everything. My son did the ropes course, which he said was fun but not long enough compared to others he has done. The zip lines seem to be the main attraction here but we have gone zip lining outdoors, which I would imagine would offer a better experience and better views as again, this place is small. They advertise the last koala experience as being at 630 but we arrived at 445 only to be told the koalas already went home for the day. Maybe having that experience would have made up for our visit there but maybe not because again, this place is very small.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to visit and write a review of the Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome, we're sorry to hear you were disappointed with your experience. Even if you felt the area was small, we have a large range of diverse wildlife includes crocodiles, lizards, koalas, turtles, snakes, a rare white kookaburra, and over 250 birds from a variety of species, so there are plenty of animals to be seen.

The ropes and zipline course is one of the only courses in Cairns, and being on top of a Casino in the heart of the town we do feel it is very unique and exciting.

We are sorry to hear you were unable to get a picture with a koala, could you please email media@capta.com.au to let us know where you saw it advertised that the last experience is at 6.30pm as this is not the case and we would like to ensure there is not misleading information in the market.

Once again your feedback is appreciated
