We flew to the barrier reef from port douglas and met up with a quicksilver boat. Pilots were top notch- friendly, knowledgeable and willing to show us a great deal. We enjoyed the stunning views of the beach, rainforests, and reefs. Saw some turtles, rays, and sharks from above. Made an unforgettable day for us!

We wanted to experience The Great Barrier Reef in several different ways and found the perfect way.
We used 'gbrhelicopters.com.au' who are linked with 'Sunlover Reef Cruises'. There were 4 of us (adults) and we nicely fitted a helicopter. GBR have a landing point right next to the marina but we were given a free lift to the airport and caught our flight from there (it is only 10 minutes to the airport). The excursion included a helicopter flight out to the reef which gave great views of the surrounding landscape, obviously, but we flew over reef areas where there were no signs of human activity at all and so saw the glory of it all as nature intended. It was fantastic. This lasted about 40 minutes and we then flew to 'Moore Reef' which has a large covered pontoon anchored to the sea bed. This section of the reef was just for 'Sunlover'. There was a large cruiser attached to the pontoon and this was our return journey to the mainland. On the boat there was a large, well stocked buffet served with lots of choice and of course fresh seafood, salad and fruit. One of our group is a veggie and he was well catered for too. Tea, coffee and water were available. Food, drinks and activities are included in the price but there was also a bar that sold alcohol, crisps and ice cream and so on if you wanted it. Activities on the boat were well organised and you could do one experience after another. We had lunch then went on the semi-submersible for a dry underwater view of the reef and the marine life, followed by a glass bottom boat trip over another section of the reef. Both lasted about 30 minutes, which flew by. The staff of the boats gave a commentary about the reef & types of coral while you gawp at the different types, sizes and amazing colours of the fish. We then went snorkelling on the reef within a section that was marked out. Scuba is also available. There were staff on lookout and life saving type duties so you felt very safe. We spent a couple of hours snorkelling. The reef had sustained some recent damage but it didn't detract from how amazing it was. There are so many fish and they are so brightly coloured. Its just like it is on the TV!! The fish don't care about you either, they come right up to you for a good look. Having almost turned into a prune I got out and took a look at the 'touch tank' were various sea creatures had been placed from the reef area. There were starfish, sea cucumbers, Red and Blacks. Young and old had the opportunity to touch the creatures under the supervision of staff while being told a bit more about them. The creatures were then carefully released back into the ocean. The final activity before we started our return journey was a chance for people to feed the fish. The kids especially loved this and it seemed to bring the whole experience together. All diving and safety equipment is provided along with advice for its usage. The staff couldn't be more friendly especially Eddie Loi who ran the team and is a great asset for the company. They were all so interactive with the guests and wanted every last person to get as much from their experience as they could. There was a diversity of nationalities on the boat and even staff to assist the non English speaking guests, mostly South East Asian, but everyone just got on. The return journey took about 3 hours, stopping briefly at Fitzroy Island. There were people of all ages on the pontoon, disable access (on the boat and pontoon) and all were well catered for and I think this excursion is suitable for almost everyone.
In conclusion:-
The whole trip incorporated everything that we could possibly wanted to do on the reef and it surpassed our expectations. I don't know how much the day would be without the helicopter but it cost us something under £200 each, depending on the exchange rate. Our memories and photos tell us it was money very well spent.
