Nice relaxing trip, very informative with the in train commentary, some spectacular views and a good rest stop at a station on the way up

Very enjoyable day. Lovely scenery - rainforest, waterfalls, gorges all from above. We did the late start so it was the skyrail up and scenic train back. There are lots of touristy type markets up top in Kuranda - we didn't spend much time there. We did go to the butterfly farm and that was interesting.

After catching the Skyrail to Kuranda, and then spending a few hours in The town, the train was a lengthy return to the car. The kids loved it and the views are spectacular. I think it is better to catch the train back however rather returning the same way on the cable car as you get to see the waterfalls and scenery from a different aspect. The fact that the railway was ever built is in itself amazing considering the terrain and the technology available at the time.

I went the Freshwater Station to Kuranda route and it was spectacular. Very informative and such stunning views. I was lucky enough to sit near a window but it is very open so sitting elsewhere would have still been awesome. The stop at the falls was beautiful.

Did this train trip 33 years ago. Was much as I remember it. Though now they have a guide over the loud speaker advising you what to look out for. The train stops at Barron Falls to get a good snap. Definitely worth a go if you have a free day in Cairns. We traveled up on the skyrail gondola & back on the train. If you can get a seat on the left of the train because nearly everything is on the left heading back into Cairns. The train is an old rattler, took me back in time, but is very comfortable. Maybe in the future they should invest in a couple of those open /clear roof/side cabins like in Canada etc to get a better view.
