The Atherton tablelands are huge. You have the northern tablelands, southern tablelands, and then towns in the middle (like Yungaburra and Atherton. We took the twisty road from Cairns on a day trip to tablelands, stopping at the Yungaburra Platypus viewing platorfm, curtain fig tree, the millaa millaa overlook, got some takeaway coffee and a snack in millaa millaa, visited millaa milla falls, and then too the highway south over the mountains back to Cairs stopping at Josephine Falls and Babinda Boulders. That was an awesome full day trip (left Cairns around 8:30 got back around 4:30). You have to really plan what you want to see on the tablelands because you could stay here for days and not see it all.

The area is on a high plateau and much cooler than the coast, we were lucky with the weather and enjoyed the drive around seeing the sites. The road from Innisfail to Millaa Millaa is the easiest to drive, Cairns to Karunda is a bit windy, but the road from Danbulla to Gordenvale is definitely not for the faint hearted but worth it. Do your research on where you want to visit to save on the driving.

Really amazing and picturesque part of Queensland. Lots of tours to choose from if you are staying in Cairns. Everywhere you look is absolutely stunning and picture perfect. Also really relaxing and peaceful which was a nice change from busy Cairns! Definitely recommend allocating a day or couple of days to explore!

We drove from Palm Cove over the mountains to Mareeba and stopped at the visitor centre which is also a museum and a cafe. We had a coffee before heading south to Atherton and on to Lake Barrine. There is a teahouse on Lake Barrine where you can have refreshments or meals but especially do a boat tour of the lake with Steve. It's an hour well spent! We then completed the loop back to Palm Cove via Cairns. It was a full day but generally easy driving ---take care going up and down the mountains -- and a total change from the coastal strip. Just go to see the beautiful country if nothing else.
