Owner description: Seastar Cruises premium reef cruise combines the outer Great Barrier Reef with a coral cay island. In only 1 1/4 hours the fast air-conditioned Seastar 1 can take you from Cairns to magnificent Michaelmas Cay, the largest of the local uninhabited coral cays. Cruising past Green Island, Upolu cay and Oyster reef Seastar is the first boat to arrive. After an enjoyable time here it is a short 20 minute cruise to the splendid Hastings Reef sitting on the very outer edge. This is where the corals thrive, well out from the coast away from the influence the rivers and streams, adjacent to the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. You will have 2 1/2 hours at each location. Plenty of time to go snorkeling, do a introductory dive, relax on the beach of the Island or join a tour in the Glass Bottom Boat at Hastings Reef. The day cruise on Seastar inlcudes Morning/Afternoon tea, high quality snorkel equipment, Wetsuit or Lycra suit (depending on the time of year), Glass Bottom Boat Tour, Hot & Cold Buffet Lunch, Reef Interpretation & Guided Snorkel Tours on each spot.

The youngest captain in Cairns, and the most knowledge! They have a new glass-bottomed boat you can use for free while on the tour. Be sure to do this, the captain know tons about the reef that he will share with you. We loved our day tour with Seastar - and would do it again in a minute! Well worth the cost!!

wonderful crew, extremely attentive and friendly. we did the intro dive and snorkeled as well. quite a few snorklers among the licensed divers on the boat, seastar took care of everyone from what we saw compared to a company we had went with snorkeling in Key Largo in Florida, absolutely fantastic. wonderful day out, saw a manta ray, huge clam, coral, fish, just an amazing day out, highly recommend Seastar. there are two intro dives you can go on, you have to have been on the first one to go on the second one, the instructor will ask you if you would like to go on the second after everyone's back on the boat from the first location and you pay at the end of the trip. my husband got pretty seasick so we didnt opt in originally for the second dive and tried to get in after when he felt better but she was taking two groups instead of three so we missed that unfortunately, makes sense though since she has to know how to divide up the groups.

We had a great day on the reef with Seastar. We chose this boat because they have a smaller number of people on board than other boats - a maximum of 35. The crew gave us a great welcome and made the day lots of fun. The music the captain played was a bit over the top and was definitely not what we expected in this special environment (my partner could even hear it while on her dive!). Michaelmas Cay was beautiful, but the best snorkelling was at Hastings reef. Stunning fish and we were lucky to swim with a turtle. The reef is like a different world, although the colours were not as vivid as we were expecting - much of the coral was dead. We had plenty of time to snorkel or dive. The food was great and we were really well looked after. All the staff made a special effort to chat to you and were very friendly. Be aware that all reef trips will go out regardless of the weather conditions. We were very lucky that conditions were excellent, but the previous week there had been 25 knot winds and trips went ahead. Would definitely recommend this trip.

Hello Patty,
Glad you enjoyed your day with us.
Yes errrr - ummm the music, we know sometimes the crew will connect their own iPods and generally it is ok, however some playlists have not been fully vetted. Thus leaving open the opportunity for tunes of a questionable nature to be aired.
I have spoken to them regarding this and we can anticipate some a more selective arrangement songs in the future.
What your partner heard under the water most likely was our environmentally safe sonic anti-foul system. This method requires the generation of irritating sounds underwater that prevents the weed and algae from attaching to the hull, while at the same time not affecting fish or other marine life.
So we now do not have to used delaminating (polluting) or even worse, toxic anti-foul.
The down side is that the clicks and beats can be heard quite clearly underwater when near the boat.

Awesome day, great boat and cruise to go on. It was difficult with so much competition with reef cruises, I found this on tripadvisor and wanted to keep the goods going. This really was an awesome day. Great crew and captain. They took us to two spots to see the reef. We were provided with massive lunch that was delicious. Not much more to say. This is number 1.
