Owner description: Seastar Cruises premium reef cruise combines the outer Great Barrier Reef with a coral cay island. In only 1 1/4 hours the fast air-conditioned Seastar 1 can take you from Cairns to magnificent Michaelmas Cay, the largest of the local uninhabited coral cays. Cruising past Green Island, Upolu cay and Oyster reef Seastar is the first boat to arrive. After an enjoyable time here it is a short 20 minute cruise to the splendid Hastings Reef sitting on the very outer edge. This is where the corals thrive, well out from the coast away from the influence the rivers and streams, adjacent to the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. You will have 2 1/2 hours at each location. Plenty of time to go snorkeling, do a introductory dive, relax on the beach of the Island or join a tour in the Glass Bottom Boat at Hastings Reef. The day cruise on Seastar inlcudes Morning/Afternoon tea, high quality snorkel equipment, Wetsuit or Lycra suit (depending on the time of year), Glass Bottom Boat Tour, Hot & Cold Buffet Lunch, Reef Interpretation & Guided Snorkel Tours on each spot.

Swimming on the Great Barrier Reef and birdwatching at Michaelmas Cay were "bucket list" goals for my wife and me. We could not have selected a better boat and crew to achieve these two goals. The cap of 35 people coupled with a wonderful crew made our time on the Seastar Cruise absolutely outstanding. Great food and drinks, fantastic service, comfortable boat -- every expectation was exceeded. Watching Nemo swimming on the Great Barrier Reef and birdwatching with noddies, boobies, and terns on Michaelmas Cay were dreams come true. We highly recommend Seastar Cruises!!!

Crew were very welcoming, with a nice boat and a very good visitor number - we were only 27 (normally around 35ish maybe - so lots of crew to visitor. All the crew were knowlegable about the reef, with sense of pride in the tour. Went to two locations, witht he fast boat getting to the first before the big tours arrived so it was peaceful. Got to see some amazing things in the reef, and with such a friendly boat made it all the better.

There are many boats offering similar services, going out of Cairns. We chose this boat because they went out to Michaelmas Cay, which was great for nesting seabirds. This boat was recommended because for birders, they will take you out to the island first and give you 20 minutes to have a look at the sea birds before everyone else comes out. Seastar were also recommended by some birder friends in Australia. We had planned to bird watch at Michaelmas Cay and they snorkel at Hastings Reef. The crew very incredibly friendly and helpful and the food really very good. We had a full body suit to protect us from stingers and for warmth. It was the first time that any of us (myself, my husband and my 11 year old daughter) had snorkeled. I don't know what we had expected, but it was absolutely amazing. Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef are at the outer reef and so in much better condition then some of the inner reefs. The reef and the variety of the fish were jaw dropping. We did lots of great of things on this holiday, but this experience was by far the best. Don't leave Cairns without trying snorkeling and use this boat. The boat also gets very booked up, so you need to book at least a couple of weeks in advance to be sure of a place.

The choice of trips on the Great Barrier Reef is overwhelming but I am so glad that we chose Seastar. We wanted a more personal experience and the low numbers ensure this. Along with my husband we did 2 dives at an introductory level and it was fantastic, especially at Hastings reef. Ivan who was our dive guide was fantastic, he was really helpful and gave you confidence to dive so a special thanks to him. All the crew were excellent and couldn't do enough for you. This was a lifetime ambition for me as the only other time I have dived was 30 years ago and I have wanted to dive on the reef ever since, so THANKYOU Seastar for an unforgettable experience.

We picked Seastar as we wanted a more personal experience. It was an awesome day with a very attentive and enthusiastic crew. We were greeted with coffee and muffins and given really good briefings on the sites we we were to visit...Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef. All you need to snorkel was provided and the snorkel tours were great for enhancing knowledge of the coral, fishes etc. Lunch was plentiful and even more food and coffee provided after our second stop at Hastings Reef. The crew are fab and really friendly. This is a great trip to go on, even if you are a nervous or novice snorkeller!
