Owner description: Seastar Cruises premium reef cruise combines the outer Great Barrier Reef with a coral cay island. In only 1 1/4 hours the fast air-conditioned Seastar 1 can take you from Cairns to magnificent Michaelmas Cay, the largest of the local uninhabited coral cays. Cruising past Green Island, Upolu cay and Oyster reef Seastar is the first boat to arrive. After an enjoyable time here it is a short 20 minute cruise to the splendid Hastings Reef sitting on the very outer edge. This is where the corals thrive, well out from the coast away from the influence the rivers and streams, adjacent to the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. You will have 2 1/2 hours at each location. Plenty of time to go snorkeling, do a introductory dive, relax on the beach of the Island or join a tour in the Glass Bottom Boat at Hastings Reef. The day cruise on Seastar inlcudes Morning/Afternoon tea, high quality snorkel equipment, Wetsuit or Lycra suit (depending on the time of year), Glass Bottom Boat Tour, Hot & Cold Buffet Lunch, Reef Interpretation & Guided Snorkel Tours on each spot.

I can't say enough good things about this experience. The crew is friendly, funny, knowledgeable, and just plain fun! There were less than 35 people on board so there was a lot of interaction with the crew and individual attention. They made sure that everyone was doing well and having fun all day. The morning tea (coffee, tea, water, muffins), lunch (chicken, assorted salads, cheesy potatoes, cold cuts, cheeses, and bread), and afternoon tea (tea, coffee, water, cakes) were delicious. They also have beer, wine, soda, and water for purchase on the boat.

My group of 4 was the only group to go diving (the rest snorkeled) so we had Jelle (one of the dive masters) all to ourselves...it was great. He was patient and kind -- and a lot of fun, too. Another cool thing was that they take photos with an underwater camera throughout the day and then post them on their Facebook page that night -- so you don't have to buy them, you can download them for free. The crew also donates any tips they receive to various charities (this month the tips are going to help with disaster-relief in the Philippines).

I can't recommend this experience enough. It may be a little more costly than some of the others, but it was totally worth every penny. Being on a smaller boat with a smaller number of people is worth the extra cost as it allows you to get to different places on the reef that aren't as crowded as some of the more popular spots that other, larger vessels go.

Excellent day. There were about 25 of us on the boat with a friendly, lively and informative crew. Plenty of help and tuition with snorkelling equipment, safety and technique. Great guiding over the coral when we were in the water- with the added thrill of swimming along side a turtle.

A brilliant day from start to finish. Professional and friendly crew from many countries, including crazy Dutch guy and ultra cool French man.

Plenty of room on the boat, tour had 35 on board with 9 crew so great individual attention as crew had time to chat and joke.

As a couple in our early sixties we were the oldest by far but never felt out of place. It was my wife's first attempt at snorkelling and crew member Molly was very patient getting her used to the equipment. As the first stop is the beautiful sandy Michaelmas Cay inexperienced/nervous clients are able to swim from the beach to gain confidence for the second swim over Hastings reef.

Too many fish, turtles and even reef sharks to count. All food is provided during the day, in fact you get exactly what is described on their website and leaflet.

Final bonus is that the crew take dozens of photos throughout the day and post them on their Facebook site within 2 hours of docking back in Cairns.

This one day trip ticked all the boxes. Great team, each taking a prominent role and chatting with the day-trippers. Safety and great gear was at a premium. The included lunch was fabulous! The two reefs we visited were very good. I would recommend to those going with the team member and doing a tour of each reef. Great info.

Brownie points for plucking a plastic bottle out of the water... however, just one downside was being dropped off at the end of the jetty and being made to walk at least 10mins in the pouring rain. I would really recommend to Seastar to being dropped at the pick up pier and then going back to fill up the boat you would have got more brownie points! This wasn't a great note to end on...

Overall a great trip, would recommend.

What can I say from start to finish the staff were amazing and really make your trip there all friendly, attentive and not missing a sense of humour. Great for both snorkelers and divers, lunch was good Nd there were plenty of refreshments throughout the day to. My wife and I dived with a few other dive companies during our trip to OZ and your staff were by far the best so thanks again for the great day and making our trip that much more enjoyable, we'll definitely be recommending you to friends who may visit in the future
