Owner description: Seastar Cruises premium reef cruise combines the outer Great Barrier Reef with a coral cay island. In only 1 1/4 hours the fast air-conditioned Seastar 1 can take you from Cairns to magnificent Michaelmas Cay, the largest of the local uninhabited coral cays. Cruising past Green Island, Upolu cay and Oyster reef Seastar is the first boat to arrive. After an enjoyable time here it is a short 20 minute cruise to the splendid Hastings Reef sitting on the very outer edge. This is where the corals thrive, well out from the coast away from the influence the rivers and streams, adjacent to the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. You will have 2 1/2 hours at each location. Plenty of time to go snorkeling, do a introductory dive, relax on the beach of the Island or join a tour in the Glass Bottom Boat at Hastings Reef. The day cruise on Seastar inlcudes Morning/Afternoon tea, high quality snorkel equipment, Wetsuit or Lycra suit (depending on the time of year), Glass Bottom Boat Tour, Hot & Cold Buffet Lunch, Reef Interpretation & Guided Snorkel Tours on each spot.

Perfectly organised trip, we always had the feeling we were safe and sound. It's a small and fast boat - really good to get a more personal touch with only 35 people on board. We drove out to two places on the reef for snorkelling, which gave us very different impressions - one from a sandy island with shallow waters, one in the middle of the sea with deep coral gorges. Got detailed instructions about safety and were equipped with very good wetsuits, goggles (even with optical lenses), snorkels and fins. Meals on board were great with muffins+coffee/tea for breakfast, a delicious buffet lunch and cakes/fruit in the afternoon. Some people chose to go on a glass bottom boat, but this is no alternative to snorkelling because you can hardly see as much and would miss out on the great experience to swim among the fish in the water.
Handy hints: If you are prone to seasickness definitely take tablets beforehand because it is a very fast boat and the ride can be rough. Also put on plenty of sunscreen on the BACK of your legs because you can easily get sunburnt there while snorkelling and looking down into the water for so long. We had a great time and would choose this company again!

First, this tour company organizes small group excursions on the reef which is a very thing after having tested other larger boats in Cairns. You will appreciate the personal touch added to it, especially if you are new in snorkeling/ scuba diving. They may not go to more remote reef locations but it doesn't really matters because where they go, Michaelsmas Cay and Hastings reef, there is plenty to see.
The team is great, very helpful, funny, and makes you feel good and confident.

SeaStar was our best reef tour.

We had booked an introductory dive with Sea Star. We got sea sick, and could not complete the dive. But, we did snorkel, and got lucky as we snorkeled the outer reef during low tide. This helped us see a lot of coral formations from very close. In fact, if anything, we had to be careful to not hit / touch the corals.

GBR review:
Amazing, simply amazing. We had taken a guided snorkel tour, as with our falling energy levels, we weren't feeling too confident of snorkeling by ourselves in the ocean. But it was amazing. The tour guide gave us a good 45-60 min tour, covering a good amount of area, and showing us some amazing coral formations. We even saw a couple of coral wall formations from very close. Even the earlier stop at Michaelmas Cay was very good, and we had a great time in the water.

Absolutely worth it.

Sea Star review:
The best parts about Sea-star are the small group size, which allows them to give attention to everyone and doesn't make you feel lost. The staff are very helpful, and continuously tendered to me and my wife - both of us had been sea sick throughout the day. They even agreed to refund the scuba dive charges, since we had booked beforehand but were in no position to dive on the day.

Also, the charges already include all the equipment, plus guided snorkel tours at both locations and also the glass bottom boat tour. The glass bottom is a bit of a let down after all the in-water action, but I am not sure it is Seastar specific.

Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to visit the GBR.

Booked onto this trip after the reviews I read on here, I was so glad I chose sea star. The whole day went fantastic. From getting on to the boat, where you are welcomed by friendly staff and lovely muffins, to stopping at the 1st reef and seeing a harmless shark. The lunch was lovely, plenty of food for everyone. The second reef was even better than the 1st, more fish and brighter corals. I decided to scuba dive at the 1st site which was absolutely amazing, my instructor Andy was so good, made us feel safe at all times and showed us some fab things at the bottom. After the second reef we were given a great choice of mini cakes (choc was delicious). A brilliant touch at the end was getting a certificate and round of applause for completing my 1st scuba dive. All in all, the day was great and the small number of people on the boat mean't we were looked after unbelievably well, Andy, pedro and the team were great fun. Would highly recommend this trip.
