Owner description: Seastar Cruises premium reef cruise combines the outer Great Barrier Reef with a coral cay island. In only 1 1/4 hours the fast air-conditioned Seastar 1 can take you from Cairns to magnificent Michaelmas Cay, the largest of the local uninhabited coral cays. Cruising past Green Island, Upolu cay and Oyster reef Seastar is the first boat to arrive. After an enjoyable time here it is a short 20 minute cruise to the splendid Hastings Reef sitting on the very outer edge. This is where the corals thrive, well out from the coast away from the influence the rivers and streams, adjacent to the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. You will have 2 1/2 hours at each location. Plenty of time to go snorkeling, do a introductory dive, relax on the beach of the Island or join a tour in the Glass Bottom Boat at Hastings Reef. The day cruise on Seastar inlcudes Morning/Afternoon tea, high quality snorkel equipment, Wetsuit or Lycra suit (depending on the time of year), Glass Bottom Boat Tour, Hot & Cold Buffet Lunch, Reef Interpretation & Guided Snorkel Tours on each spot.

Couldn't have made a better choice for our first snorkeling experience. The crew members were fun and professional in their reassurance as I jumped off the Seastar for the first time. Their choice of sites allowed for variety and the service was excellent. Because this was a smaller sized group you were allowed the sensation of being in "the wild" of the Coral Sea. Don't miss this!

We booked via the uk before our first trip down under...wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef but apprehensive about not ending up with a 'cattle market' experience we read bad review about with some of the bigger tour operators on cruises with 100+ people. We were also a little self conscious, not being big swimmers, in our early forties and fifties and not having terribly slim tummies!

We were delighted with the trip! A medium size catamaran in great condition, smaller group of about 30, a good number of really friedly and relaxed staff of mixed ages...and off we went from Cairns harbour...we'd heard stories on our tours elsewhere in the preceeding days from others who'd been on bigger tours and they said their trips had been hugely disappointing, with a nauseating ride out to the reef and nothing much to see when they got there....on our trip we were bracing ourselves, and the crew did offer sea sick pills for three dollars, but everyone was fine...it was a fab and fast ride out with only a gentle sway along the way...I guess we must have been lucky with the weather! On the way the crew went around everyone individually to help you get a good fit with snorkelling gear, and find buoyancy wet suits to fit, which everyone used. Our tour had two stops...first at Michelmas Kay where our boat stopped just off a sandy island bird sanctuary...a dinghy took us the short ride to the beach where we had a chance to get comfortable with our snorkelling gear and tentatively get into the water nice and gently and safely...really helped us build our confidence. The wet suits really improved buoyancy and we could just glide along without even needing life vests or noodles! It was amazing...so many fish, mixed coral - but it's nature so don't go expecting everything to be fluorescent colour! The fish were everywhere, all different colours and sizes...and so close you really felt you were among them...parrot fish were huge! We had ages there and then got back on the boat for lunch which was a pretty good buffet served by the staff...then a rest for a short bit to let tummies settle while enjoying the views of the amazing water and view before heading off to the next stop in the ocean at Hastings reef without any island...by this time we had our confidence and managed to slip off the end of the boat straight into the water for snorkelling in deeper water...it was incredible! Such varied reef with shallower and deeper parts, amazing views deep into gullies and again fab coral and fish. A truly amazing tip and life experience we will never forget! So glad we did it and would recommend Seastar if you want a smaller group, easy pace and two amazing snorkelling spots...you could dive too...maybe next time!

Considering that there are so many Barrier Reef day trips from Cairns, my wife and I were hoping that this trip was not going to be a disappointment. It was better than we expected! The crew was fantastic, always giving you personalised service. My wife had not snorkelled before nor is she a swimmer, but Kelsea was at her side supporting and urging her to give it a try. Anthony was a great frontman: his sense of humour is infectious, he seemed to know every fish in the reefs, even had names for them. The other guys, Tim, Lee (who also steered the boat) and Andy, were equally professional and always around supporting, informing etc. Nora's servings of morning and afternoon teas and lunch were sumptuous. The entire crew worked as a very cohesive team and very professional in every way. The reef at Hastings was brilliant, amazing to see nature in all its glory! The underwater camera was good to have but personally I found that since I had a lot of gear to contend with this became a slight burden; all the photos were downloaded on to an USB and random photos were uploaded on to Facebook - all done in a day's work. The glass-bottom boat was very nice especailly for those who did not go on the snorkel tour. This very efficient team even gave all the passengers a sort of guard of honour on our exit. All in all it was a memorable day. We have no hesitation in recommending SEASTAR REEF CRUISE to anyone wanting to do a one-day reef cruise.
