Travelled from Cairns to Brisbane by Railbed a journey of 25 hours. The train leaves at 8.35am but you have to check in your luggage by 8.00am. Unfortunately the shopping centre in front of the station does not open until 9.00am so you have to walk around the outside of the centre unless being dropped off at the station. The train left on time and whilst it was at one stage running 45 minutes late it ended up arriving on time. Unfortunately, to catch up the train needed to travel fast during the night, swaying and making it difficult to sleep. It also did not help that there were a number of stops where people left or joined the train during the night, were given wake-up calls and resulted in staff regularly going up and down the carriage opening the end of carriage doors. I have never travelled on a train giving evacuation instructions aircraft style. This train regularly interupts your entertainment screen to show you a video of this. I must have been shown the same video at least 4 times. When travelling by Railbed food is included. You are given a posh menu showing you what you could choose. Unfortunately, when I made my choice I was told that whether I had it or not depended upon what the remainder of passengers chose as we were having what was left from the Brisbane to Cairns trip and there was not much of my choice left. Finally, is it not about time that WiFi was provided, even if that could not be done for the entire trip. I enjoyed trying the journey once but I would not do it again.

We picked the train up at Caboolture and a staff member, Daniel took us to our Rail Bed, which is just like business class on a plane, he showed us how everything worked such as the onboard entertainment unit, seat recliner & how to use the table. Daniel then took our orders for dinner & breakfast. Food was very nice and included a complimentary alcoholic or soft drink (tea & coffee was served as well) and served at our seats. We were notified after dinner that when we were ready a staff member would come and get our bed ready. Towels, shampoo, conditioner & bedding are all supplied including ear plugs in case they are needed (we didn't need them) and the amenities including showers were kept clean. Extra drinks & food were available to buy at a very reasonable cost in the dining carriage. Just a tip, be careful booking connecting buses, trains & planes as the train can run a little over schedule especially if the weather is hot as the metal train lines can heat up which means the train has to go at a slower pace. The trip was amazing and taking in the scenery was enjoyable (you see so much more than if you drive) we would fully recommend it, so much so we are planning on trying the Spirit of the Outback next. Thank you to all staff, nothing was too much for them.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review Rita! We're so glad you had such an enjoyable trip with Daniel and the rest of our wonderful team on the Spirit of Queensland. We look forward to welcoming you back on the Spirit of the Outback.
We travelled from Brisbane to Cairns 25hr .the sleeper bed we had was wonderful. The staff were all so helpful.Meals were nice to,If you are a smoker only time you get is when they stop at some stations.
Thank you for your review, we're delighted you enjoyed your journey aboard the Spirit of Queensland. The RailBeds are something else, and having meals brought to your seat is a relaxing experience.
Yes we are a non-smoking service.
We checked-in to the Rail-beds section which is like business classes on the plane. The seat was okay but too small for those who have bigger size infant. You are not required to buy a seat for your infant (anyone below 4 years old) but I would suggest you to imagine having both you and your infant on an airplane business class. My brother has a pair and one of them is already almost as big as my five-year-old! I regret not getting a seat for his twins!
Before we went on board, I had wondered if there are towels provided. In fact, they have all the body soap, shampoo and conditioner! We were being assigned to the seats closer to the bigger shower and toilet combined. It is actually build for those who are on wheel chairs or the physically challenged passengers. I thought it was great for me to give my five-year-old a quick shower before his bedtime.
Food was great though the coffee machine was broken, service is absolutely fabulous for a overnight train! Brooke and Daniel, the attendants were attentive and made sure that we were settled. The crew changed at Townsville before evening and the next shifted crew were equally attentive. I am amazed by Julie and one other crew whom I wasn’t able to catch her name - it was sleeping time for most of us and they were still smiley and understanding.
For those who are light-sleepers, just be mindful that there may be children of any age. Imagine we have three boys under the age of six and they were throwing their ‘usual tantrum’ after more than five hours of the ride. One of the passengers actually told us to step up on our parenting!! Err... these are children... it is natural that they get coup up in an enclosed space for about 25 hours from Cairns to Brisbane.
The train was actually delayed due to the heat of the summer, heating up the rails that cause the bumpiness of the ride, slowing down the train by nearly an hour, which actually work out fine for us!!!
Ultimately the ride was wonderful!!! I would encourage you to look at Australia in different light if you have the time.
Thank you so much for your pleasant review. We are so glad you enjoyed your journey with us on the Spirit of Queensland. We look forward to welcoming you and your family onboard again soon :)
I had left my wallet behind in a friend's car and so the plan was to meet him at the next station, the train wasn't going to stop at that station though until they heard my plight and did a dedicated stop just for me. Big cheers to the driver, to Joy and the staff at the cafe as well as the stranger sitting behind me whom offered to pay for my lunch. Cheers and Merry Xmas!
Thank you for this lovely review. We are happy to hear that you were able to get your wallet back! We look forward to seeing you aboard the Spirit of the Outback again soon :)
Will never travel on this train again. The seats are absolute torture. My allocated seating was next to an extremely obese lady which meant I had no room and had to find a vacant seat. I could only use this seat until a few stops ahead. Stayed awake all night mostly in the dining car (should be called the microwaved frozen food car). The food is crap so I advise you eat before you get on. This is definitely not the Orient Express or any train with decent food or service.
Talked to other passengers who vowed never to travel on this train again due to the back pain and discomfort caused by those seats. A lady had to call staff because a mentally ill man was trying to strangle his carer father and was threatening to kill him in front of her kids. They were thrown off the train at the next stop. Really classy train this one. 🙄
Would advise flying if the train trip is any more than 3 hours. There is absolutely no comfort on this train, so don’t expect a good experience and don’t believe Qld Rails glossy brochures. You are just treated as cattle on this train and it’s always running late, so if you have a connection somewhere, hope like hell you can get to it on time.
We very much regret that you did not enjoy your experience on the Spirit of Queensland. We do take customer feedback very seriously so cannot recommend highly enough that you provide feedback to our Customer Feedback Team at customerfeedback@qr.com.au
