Owner description: The Cairns Aquarium is a public aquarium that provides a world class venue for seeing and interacting with the incredible plants, animals, and habitats found only in Australia’s Tropical North Queensland, a region which borders two World Heritage listed environments: The Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest.

The aquarium is very new and looks really beautiful. A lot of thought has gone into the displays and the layout. I could see areas where they had left room to grow. Had a fun conversation with one of the staff about their adorable baby epaulet sharks. The two storey reef tank I could watch forever and the main tank has a good variety of sharks and rays. Overall a lovely representation of the reef and the rainforest. My only disappointment was they don't currently offer dive/swim with the sharks.

Thank you for your review Brenda. We're glad to hear you enjoyed your visit. We hope to offer a dive with the sharks experience later this year, so hopefully next time you're in town, we will have this up and running. Thank you.

Our tour group canceled tours during our visit but a friend we knew that lived here gave a private tour of the area and it made a difference in our visit.

The Cairns Aquarium is across the street from my hotel. It has been open less than a year. It is expensive, compared to others I have visited. Pay the extra to go behind the scenes.
I wish I could take photos behind the scenes. There is a green sea turtle there, as well as growing coral polyps.
There are lots of fish.

Thank you for sharing your review Susan. We're glad to hear you had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet Brodie, the green sea turtle undergoing his last stage of rehabilitation. We hope to see you next time you're in Cairns.

Bring your sleeping bag, a camping mat, a pillow and a drink bottle. The sleep over experience starts with a friendly greeting followed by an introduction to the staff. Then we are taken on a private tour of the aquarium. You can choose where you want to sleep. We chose under the tunnel. Every time you open your eyes you can see sharks swimming right above your head. Dinner is set up like a picnic next to a billabong minus the dreaded Bunyip. We ate real burgers complete with pineapple and beetroot followed by some chocolate brownies and strawberries. After we changed in to our pyjamas we watched a movie Moana and then we went to bed. Trying to sleep was really hard as we kept watching the fish, sharks and rays swimming around. At night they are so active. The experience ended with a fun quiz and a filling breakfast of toast, eggs, bacon, juice, tea and coffee. Things to note - if you like it dark to sleep then bring an eye mask. I found it a comfortable brightness but if you are used to pitch black dark at night it may be a tad light for you so bring something to cover your eyes. Like all things it is what you make it. So if you go there with a positive and fun attitude then you are going to have an absolute ball. You might even have a few giggles and learn something along the way. I don't think this would be something for kids under 5 but for everyone else it's a must do. We were lucky to be in the very first group to do this and although it is expensive it is so worth it.
