This is a tricky review to write as we had a lovely time in Brisbane and the Gambaro is certainly a gorgeous looking hotel.
We had an atrium room, and while beautifully decorated it was dark. Very dark. And tiny to the point of slightly claustrophobic (not helped by all our luggage) Even with all the lights on it's very dim. Open the curtains, you say? Why yes! But atrium rooms have as good as no natural light, what they do have is a view of a truly beautiful light sculpture...and every other room and the corridors around the atrium. I could see right into the other bedrooms, I could see a gentleman sleeping in his bed. Which in a roundabout way brings me to the air conditioning! Brisbane is hot. You need AC for a comfortable nights sleep. The AC at the Gambaro is odd. It keeps turning itself off, completely off. (We had no balcony door which has been used as a possible reason for this in another review) This meant my husband got up numerous times through the night to put it back on again, as we were hotter than we'd been in Bali, where we'd just arrived from (but that's another story, involving volcanoes and planes struck by lightning). Next on the oddness, the bathroom door is made out of a stunning price of wooden panelling in an open fretwork, lovely design idea, completely impractical in a small room, especially when house keeping lets themselves in and you're naked - AND you had the "do not disturb light" on your door. This happened twice, nakedness was only involved once! Which brings me to housekeeping. We went out for a chunk of one of our days, leaving the 'please make up our room' light on. Arriving back at about 2pm our room was as we'd left it, dark, beautiful, small and in need of housekeeping (it is a 5 star hotel, after all) We let reception know and we did get clean towels, but it would have been nicer if it had all been done when we were out, and not trying to have a rest. ( reception said it's usually done around 11am)
Also the bed, while very comfortable is not a queen as advertised. It is much more like a double. Pros and cons here! Pro - if it had been any bigger there would have been even less space in the already small room.
Con - we were finding it hard to sleep because of odd AC. Proximity in bed, while romantic, was doing nothing to cool us down.
So, it's hard to give a perfect score, Which is such a shame, as there are so many good things - a well stocked mini bar, free (slow) wifi ( you can pay for the good stuff), nice laundry bag! fantastic location, beautiful decor, lovely friendly staff. Really stunning artwork...
So, I will end on a really great note. We asked if we could have a late check-out, by a couple of hours, and this was no hassle at all. Which was lovely for us and meant we could relax before our flight. So a huge thumbs up and big thank you for that.
If we come back to Brisbane I think we would stay here again. Just perhaps not an atrium room.
