Really missing their steaks, so just got a takeaway Sunday Roast beef, very nice, good size, piping hot and a fab price -$15!

They put out a daily menu on FB, check it out, phone order through and collect. Simples!

A good cheap hotel close to the CBD area so easy to walk around. The rooms are dated but clean. A/c worked well. Blinds let in too much light. There is a bar attached so get a room at the back as noise can go on until midnight.

Room tip: Ask for a room away from the bar.

If you’re looking for a great steak in a casual pub atmosphere this is your place. A good range of steaks that are cooked spot on with plenty of other menu options.

Service is quick and the open view of the kitchen creates a good atmosphere in the bar/bistro area. Nice, relaxed outdoor are adjacent to the hotel pool is a also a unique experience with a good buzz generated by a mix of business, holiday era and locals.

I stayed at 'The Cav' 4 years ago and again this year. I had the same upstairs room overlooking the pool (by request when I booked). Rooms are not luxurious, but many have already been upgraded including flooring, painting and new furniture/fridge freezers etc. The pool is still one of the largest in Darwin and I made use of it by 7.00am and at night - great way to finish a day's visiting and sightseeing!

The hotel has Award winning food - very large, freshly cooked meals with mouthwatering steaks! All are individually cooked and prepared, the cost if more than reasonable and they have a Mexican Special Night on Thursday $20.00 - All this plus entertainment!

With an excellent bar, serving everything from beer, wine, cider to cocktails and soft drinks plus a very well stocked bottle shop just about every taste is catered for, whether a hotel resident, just calling in or one of the many locals.

In the mornings at about 7.00am you can meet several regular local business people and residents who call in every day for early morning coffee, tea and/or breakfast. I think one of the really good features of this pub/hotel is the fact that you can choose to eat either inside or outside - beautiful outside with the whole area surrounded by tropical plants.

No nightclub but entertainers most nights who are very popular and finish at 10.00pm when the bars also close.

I love the history of 'The Cav' - it has been in Cavenagh Street for a long time and withstood the Japanese WWII bombing in 1942 (just after the bombing of Pearl Harbour) and also withstood Cyclone Tracey in 1974 - a marvellous commendation for the designers and builders!

Put all of the above together, add the fact that you will find the most happy, helpful and efficient staff - some of whom have been there for up to 9 or 10 years - and to me it's no wonder that The Cavenagh Hotel is still one of my favourite places to stay.

Room tip: Best rooms overlook pool. Quietest rooms furthest from restaurants & bars. Cheapest are inner rooms.

Stayed here for one night prior to a tour in a 4 bed dorm (there were only two of us in it). The room was very clean and comfy, good shower with proper towels and had air con. You could hear the music a bit from the bar next door at night, but was fine with earplugs. There was limited access to plugs due to the room configuration (I assume it was once a standard double room so they were hidden behind the furniture). I loved the pool and pool area with sun beds, lounge beds and pool towels available to hotel guests only. The main problem for me as a solo traveller was that most other guests seemed to be couples or families so as a backpacker there weren’t many people to easily talk to - it was low season though so this might be different when Darwin is busier. If so, I would much prefer to stay here than Chillis (where I also stayed for a couple of nights).
