If you are interested in early days of Sydney this museum is a god place to start. Our guide from Sydney living museum was great, good information, photos and made my visit come alive. Lots of other interesting places in this area.
This terrace of simple but sturdy homes, with a refurbished corner shop that serves as a tiny visitor centre, offers a rare insight into what living in the developing settlement on The Rocks must have been like. Given their condition, it's surprising that some were occupied until late into the twentieth century. The visit is by guided tour only, in groups of eight people and takes about an hour. Our guide, Geoff, was particularly good, very aware of the issues in presenting historical properties, and we were impressed that he he had stayed in Birmingham's 'back-to-backs' in the UK, a not dissimilar preservation project. What brings the tour to life is the oral histories that they have managed to collect so you get a real sense of storytelling narrative as you go round. Very well done.
For an interesting view at how families lived back in the 1800's these 4 homes will give you an eye full. The homes have been left in most original condition.
You will be able to determine who was proud of the hard work that went into living in this 'settlement' area.
Reservations are highly recommended, tours are guided and done well.
Tours happen at 2pm, 3pm & 4pm.
In the middle of The Rocks is SusannahPlace and Museum which is a old world corner shop and residence and a couple of other houses next door all of which you can take a tour and explore to see how they lived over a century ago.
Just visited Susannah Place Museum and cannot rate highly enough. Guide was very good and the history is amazing. So pleased that these old houses in The Rocks have survived. Highly recommended
Fascinating glimpse of Sydney's history and how the lives of normal people people were so different to standards and expectations today. Things we take fr granted today were not on the radar back then.
