Having moved next door from Glebe Point YHA I was pleasantly surprised. The room was quite nice and cool - we had a relatively new bathroom, free breakfast (no frills, but who can complain) and all round a good stay. The kitchen and common outside area are nice and everyone was friendly. It is a backpackers and there really are no frills but it is pretty good. The only complaint was the rather rickety bed - get the bottom bunk if you can!
Staying at the Glebe Village Backpackers was great as it enabled me to do some of the fun touristy things around Sydney, such as:

All this and affordable accommodation at a huge old house in Glebe, very cool and fun
I stayed for 3 nights to see Sydney festival. Handy to CBD and well priced with TV and free breakfast and pancakes on weekends.
This hostel was a disappointment. I stayed in the 10-dorm shared room, and found clothes, book and other assorted items strewn all over the floor. I was not informed about the system by which beds were allocated - the first night, I went for a bed that was clearly unoccupied, and was woken up by another guest saying that it was his bed. The next night, the same guest had taken the same bed I had taken, and there were no other free beds. After asking one of the staff, I had to undo the sheets of another bed and replace them with clean ones given by the staff. Unforunately this place was just too dirty, and too congested with people.
Having spent 3 month travelling around outback australia and sleeping in a swag, I was very much looking forward to a bit of comfort upon arriving back into the city. Well when i hit Glebe Village I wish i could have been transported back to a dusty rock in the outback! It was a hole!!!!!!! I have stayed in many hostels around australia any New Zealand and this is by far the WORST i'd had the misfortune to stumble across!
The place was filthy! The room was dark and dingy and not in the least bit how it looked in the internet photo. When i opened a draw in the room thre was a dirty plate in it and general grime in the room. The kitchen and bathrooms were also really unclean which is unacceptable. There's a guy who tries his best to keep the kitchen clean but to no avail.
Although staff were pretty friendly, unfortunately they couldn't give two hoots about the service that they offer. We had paid for 3 days and wanted out to the YHA next door (go there instead, don't put yourself through the horror of this dump!) They apparantly couldn't give us a refund for the 3 days and didn't really take any account of our complaints - the lass on the recpetion was very unhelpful.
After three days we were outta there and in the YHA next door and didn't look back - apart from when we were walking past to pity the poor people who were still enduring it!
This is a nice hostel. Set in old victorian houses, it has a mellow feeling to it. The residents are mostly foreign (as in, German, French, etc, not English as their first language), and they mostly work, so if you expect this to be a party hostel go into the city.
We got free breakfast, but by the time we got there the toaster had stopped working and we received many evil stares from the other backpackers in the kitchen, so I only dared make a cup of tea. Got to know one Irish guy in our room, who was sound, but the other guy, who was French, was a bit of an ingnoramus.
The room was good, sheets, fairly clean, room big, small locker for valuables. Bathrooms really nice and clean. Location not great, good if you're a walker (45 mins slow walk), or catch a bus into Sydney.
However, the sevice was great, and the hostel was good value for money too. I'd recommend this hostel if you just want a bit of a rest and don't want to socialise much with the other residents.
