Just had a weekend in Sydney and stayed in Newtown. Seemed safe to walk around at night, didnt see any trouble anywahere. So many restaurants and cafes to choose from with almost every ethnicity catered for. Lots of great independent book shops and different clothes shops too. Easy walk to the Enmore Theatre if you want to catch a band or a show. Great train and bus service and just a 30 min or so walk to the Glebe Markets on saturdays, or to Pyrmont and into the city. Loved it.

I've spent my whole life in Australia, but Sydney always feels like a different country. I've never felt comfortable there. But I was introduced to Newtown on my last visit and found myself changing my opinion. Wonderful bookshops open all hours!

This is the bastion of cool, inner-city fringe hipness. It's rebellious, sometimes grungy and sleazy, but interesting. Restaurants, cafes, pubs, shops, and a highly eclectic vibe. The suburb regenerates itself with new shops and food places fairly regularly. A lot of students live and hang out here, owing to its proximity to Sydney University.

if you catch a train here, head right instead of left too find all the funky vintage reclaimed clothing. Nice little coffee and breakfast places to sit and people watch. Best prices in some of the shops, except the vintage op shops which charge horrendous prices for clothing.

More than just a place to buy delicacies, this under cover Farmers' market happens every Saturday morning and is a short walk from Redfern Station or King Street for visitors. Not just a place for locals to by produce, but an inner city hub on Saturdays for starting the weekend with outstanding coffees and ready to eat treats while catching up with friends - Not only does Kylie Kwong cook there herself on her stall but the consistently high quality, though not so famous other farmers and producers, all provide helpful hints and suggestions for choosing and using their produce - ranging across flowers/plants, meats, sweet treats, prepared foods, knife sharpening and vegies (along with others). A lovely and slightly off the 'main tourist' attractions way of spending an hour or so on a Saturday morning for any visiting foodie or local. http://www.eveleighmarket.com.au/
